Tell Republicans in Congress: Thoughts and prayers are not enough

Tell Republicans in Congress: Thoughts and prayers are not enough
Within hours of Wednesday’s deadly mass shooting at a Parkland, Florida high school – which took the lives of at least 17 people – Republican politicians without the courage to support real solutions to our gun violence crisis released statements and social media posts offering their “thoughts and prayers” to the victims and their families.1
It was the exact same cowardly, ineffectual response they offered after gunmen wielding AR-15 assault rifles killed people at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, a concert in Las Vegas, Pulse nightclub in Orlando and Sandy Hook Elementary School.2
It is time for Republicans in Congress to join Democrats in standing up to the National Rifle Association and pass an assault weapons ban that will save American lives.
Tragic mass shootings like the one Wednesday in South Florida have become all too common. The last 5 months alone now account for three of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in modern U.S. history.3 In the past 5 years, there have been nearly 300 school shootings in the United States4 – including 18 so far in 2018 alone.5
According to Newsweek, “Florida has some of the weakest gun laws in the country.” Gun owners are not required to have a license, they are not required to register their guns and it is perfectly legal to own semi-automatic assault rifles like the one used in Wednesday’s tragic shooting.6 The heartbreaking truth is that the combination of weak state and federal gun laws made Wednesday’s horrific attack possible.
There’s one reason why politicians consistently fail to take real action on gun violence: The National Rifle Association. The NRA has a chokehold on Congress that keeps most bills about gun control from even coming to the floor for a vote. Politicians beholden to – or afraid of – the NRA are willing to turn their backs on their constituents when it comes time to implement reasonable limits and controls on guns. But you can count on them for a “heartbroken” tweet about their “thoughts and prayers” when a tragic shooting makes the national news.
Finally breaking the NRA’s chokehold on Congress will require massive grassroots pressure on our elected officials, demanding that they deliver more than thoughts and prayers in the face of our epidemic of gun violence.
We must forcefully demand that Congress takes immediate action to ban weapons of war, including assault weapons and large capacity magazines. Please add your name to our emergency petition now.

Stand with Sen. Warren: Crack down on credit reporting companies like Equifax

Petition to Congress:
"Crack down on the out-of-control credit reporting agencies like Equifax that put Americans’ personal data at risk. Support the Data Breach Prevention and Compensation Act, which would install new safeguards and mandatory penalties, and the Freedom from Equifax Exploitation (FREE) Act, which would protect people and give them more power over their information."

Stand with Sen. Warren: Crack down on credit reporting companies like Equifax
The Equifax breach was even worse than we thought. The company recently announced that hackers accessed more of Americans’ personal information than previously revealed.1
Equifax’s disclosure comes on the heels of a scathing new report from Sen. Elizabeth Warren. The report reveals the credit reporting company’s failures before, during and after the breach – including attempting to profit off the disaster. The damning indictment arrives even as Trump’s hand-picked head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Mick Mulvaney, is sabotaging his own agency’s effort to punish Equifax.2
“We’re unveiling this report while Mick Mulvaney is killing the consumer agency’s probe into the Equifax breach,” Sen. Warren said. She warned that if we do not act, Equifax is “going to wiggle off the hook.”3
Sen. Warren has introduced legislation to crack down on credit reporting companies like Equifax, impose mandatory penalties and protect Americans’ personal data. Now, she needs our help.
Under Sen. Warren’s new bill, Equifax would have paid at least $1.5 billion in penalties for putting 145 million Americans’ personal information at risk. Instead, the company may end up making money off the breach. Equifax waited more than a month to tell the public after discovering the data breach, during which time a number of executives sold their company stock.4
When Equifax finally did come clean, they did so with a website that security experts described as “sketchy” and reportedly provided “inconsistent and unhelpful information to many.”5 In recent weeks, we learned that the stolen private data in some cases included phone numbers, email addresses and driver’s license information.
Sen. Warren’s new bill would install important protections and mandatory penalties. It would establish an office of cybersecurity at the Federal Trade Commission, mandate financial compensation for victims and impose mandatory penalties for allowing hackers to access private information.6 Along with Sen. Warren’s previous bill, the Freedom from Equifax Exploitation (FREE) Act, which would give people more control over their private data, it would be a massive step to reining in the out-of-control credit reporting agencies.
Credit companies make billions of dollars by collecting and selling our private information – like Social Security numbers, birth dates, credit card numbers and driver’s license information – with minimal oversight and zero consent. Then, they charge people to freeze or access their credit reports.7
It was not that long ago that credit bureaus would investigate your political leanings, sexuality, medical conditions, drinking habits and more to determine your “creditworthiness.” Being a person of color, a single woman or gay could hurt your credit score. During World War II, credit companies ran loyalty checks on behalf of the military. With technological advancements, computerized systems now vacuum up as much data on you as possible. From the beginning, credit bureaus have been an under-regulated, invasive corporate force helping to keep access to credit – and thus financial well-being – in the hands of the few.8
It is long past time to crack down on the credit reporting agencies like Equifax. Sen. Warren is leading the charge, and she needs our help.

Call Congress and Tell Them to STOP Trump’s #InfrastructureScam

Donald Trump has finally released his infrastructure plan and it’s as terrible as we knew it would be.
Trump said that his infrastructure plan would bring jobs, roads, and bridges to communities in need. It does the exact opposite. The former Apprentice host wants major cuts to the infrastructure programs that are already working - including a 22.2% cut in funding to the Army Corps of Engineers, the elimination of funding for the popular Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program that provides $500 million in grants to state and local governments1, and a 19% reduction in the Department of Transportation budget. All of these cuts are in addition to forcing cities and states to raise taxes and fees to cover the $1.3 trillion needed to fund this Wall Street handout. And the $200 billion Trump promised the federal government would chip in? That's coming from a $237 billion cut to Medicaid.
Over the long run Trump's bait and switch would result in a net reduction of federal support for infrastructure projects - leaving vulnerable communities unable to fund critical infrastructure like new schools, clean energy or clean drinking water. To top it off, Trump is gutting the clean air and water protections that keep us safe from dangerous chemicals, pollutants, and unsafe infrastructure projects.
This is who Trump is. From his days dealing in real estate in NYC to his run as the most divisive Presidential candidate in US history, he has always made big promises he could never keep. This infrastructure plan and the budget that was released on Monday are nothing but a shell game being played on vulnerable communities. In addition to infrastructure program cuts, the new budget also defunds PBS2, makes drastic cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, Head Start, and Section 8 housing programs.3 These cuts would decimate many Black communities and leave them ripe for the picking by private corporations who will speed up gentrification and push Black people out of neighborhoods.
To stop Trump’s scam infrastructure plan we need to push Members of Congress to support the bold principles needed to create a just 21st century infrastructure bill.

Robert Reich: Trump's infrastructure scam

Show your support as Pima County Board votes to stop receiving funds from Border Patrol's Operation Stonegarden

On February 6th, the Pima County Board of supervisors voted to stop receiving funds from Border Patrol's Operation Stonegarden.

Here is the background on Operation Stonegarden:

*Provides about $1.4 million in federal money to Pima County Sheriff's Department

*Most of that money is used for overtime compensation to Sheriff deputies. While deputies are earning that overtime, they must be in service to Border Patrol

*During those overtime hours, they are essentially beholden to Border Patrol – BP tells them where to be positioned, where to patrol, etc. Most often, they are paired up with a Border Patrol partner and ride in tandem

*Stonegarden leads to racial profiling, because it incentivizes the BP/Sheriff teams to target Hispanic drivers on the road and then pull them over for speeding 5 miles over, out tail light, broken side mirror, etc. In other words, pulling them over for things that deputies would never bother with under normal circumstances.

*Stonegarden increases criminalization of nonviolent, victimless crimes such as small marijuana possession. In fact, internal Sheriff records reveal that the vast majority of arrests coming from
Stonegarden are for misdemeanors. Stonegarden largely does not involve busting major drug cartels, human traffickers, etc.

*Among other things, we believe that Stonegarden money was behind the Pima Sheriff/Border Patrol collaboration resulting in Scott Warren’s arrest in Ajo (the No More Deaths volunteer who was arrested in January for giving food/water/blankets to migrants). In other words, Stonegarden is directly implicated in criminalizing humanitarian aid efforts

*If we can prevail on this campaign in Pima County, it holds the potential to have a ripple effect to other counties along the border. This would make Pima the largest county in the country to reject this category of federal grant money.

We know that our Board of Supervisors listen to our Pima County community. I am asking you, with your passion for the equitable treatment of migrants to support the decision the Supervisors made and to convince them to maintain their vote.

Please take some time out of your day to write to these Board of Supervisors thanking them for voting no and asking that they do not change their vote.

For the love of the rain-forest, send a special Valentine card to Cadbury today!

Whatever Valentine’s Day means to you, let’s make it a special day for the rain-forests.

Rain-forests worldwide are being razed on a mass scale where the cocoa for chocolate that we buy for our special someone is grown. Cadbury, which is owned by Mondelez, is a huge player in the chocolate world and must be held responsible for its role in destroying the homes of chimpanzees, elephants and monkeys.

On Valentine’s Day, chocolate sales go through the roof -- while the rain-forests are destroyed.

Today of all days, Cadbury can’t afford a PR disaster. We want to use this window of opportunity and put the pressure on Cadbury to commit to a ‘no deforestation’ policy worldwide.

Care to spread the love for chimpanzees and elephants today?  Send a special Valentine’s card video to Cadbury’s CEO Dirk Van de Put.

And it’s super easy. This is how it works.

Step 1: Go to Cadbury's Facebook Page.

Step 2: Copy the message below with the link to the video in the comments field under one of Cadbury's recent posts:

Hi Cadbury, we love your chocolate, but we don’t love deforestation. Commit to a no deforestation policy for Valentine's Day!

Support Community Health Worker bill currently in the Arizona Legislature

Community Health Worker bill (HB 2324) is currently in the Arizona Legislature.

Community Health Workers (CHWs) work in marginalized and medically under-served communities throughout Arizona, and they improve the cultural competency and cost-effectiveness of health services while improving health outcomes through clinical linkage, outreach, education and advocacy. This infographic describes what CHWs are and how they contribute to our health system.

Here is a short history of our legislative journey over the last few years. The Arizona Community Health Worker Association (AzCHOW) has built a broad base of support throughout Arizona that is committed to elevating the CHW Workforce.

The CHW Voluntary Certification Bill was unanimously passed by the House Health Committee a few weeks ago, and we are waiting for it to be heard by the full House. If is passes the House, it will move to the Senate. You can help out by contacting your representatives in the Arizona Legislature and letting them know you support HB 2324 Voluntary Certification for Community Health Workers.

Last year, a similar bill passed the House of Representatives but stalled and eventually died in the Senate. We need to show our legislators, particularly those in the Senate, that HB 2324 is an important way to improve our health system, increase the recognition of this vital workforce, and support better health outcomes for marginalized populations.

Here is a message you can adapt and send to their Representatives in the House:

In the subject line, note that you are writing about HB2324; Voluntary Certification for Community Health Workers.

“I am writing in support of HB2324 community health workers; voluntary certification.  I strongly support a voluntary certification process.  It will ensure the integrity of the workforce for both CHW employers and the patients that they serve.  Community Health Workers who have been voluntarily certified will have the skills and competencies that are associated with positive health outcome of patients and cost savings for health providers and insurance plans.   We are excited as this bill moves forward with the broad unanimous support of the House health Committee.   I urge you to support HB2324.
