ASK CONGRESS TO DEFEND AMERICA’S NATIONAL MONUMENTS AND OPPOSE ANY LEGISLATION THAT WOULD UNDERMINE THE ANTIQUITIES ACT

Our national monuments and public lands and waters help define who we are as a nation by telling the story of our shared historical, cultural, and natural heritage. And that’s why I was deeply disappointed in President Trump’s decision to not only eliminate national monument protections for more than 2 million acres of public lands within southern Utah’s Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments, but also specifically allow for more mining and drilling claims to be made within the original boundaries of these monuments at 9 am on February 2nd. I ask you to do all you can to defend America’s national monuments and oppose any legislation that would undermine the Antiquities Act.

Since President Theodore Roosevelt signed the Antiquities Act into law in 1906, 16 Presidents – 8 Republicans and 8 Democrats – have used the authority granted by the act to safeguard public lands, oceans, and historic sites in order to share America’s story with future generations. These national monument designations are broadly supported from coast to coast and provide a myriad of benefits to local communities, including economic boosts from tourism, places to enjoy the outdoors, clean air and water, protection for ecologically sensitive areas, and windows into our country’s history.

I am gravely concerned about legislation introduced in Congress that would weaken future Presidents’ ability to preserve our national heritage and that would take management of public lands out of the hands of the American people. I strongly urge you to oppose S. 22, S. 33, S. 132, H.R. 243, H.R. 2074, H.R. 2284, H.R. 3990, H.R. 4532, and H.R. 4558; to oppose the Antiquities Act provisions in H.R. 200, H.R. 1489, H.R. 3905, and H.R. 4239; and to vote NO if any of these measures reach the floor. Additionally, I urge you to stand with the national monuments reviewed by the Department of the Interior, and to advocate for keeping their protections intact.

National monuments are our legacy to our children and our children’s children, and a gift that belongs to all Americans. Please take a stand for future generations by defending the Antiquities Act.

Trump has declared war on our national monuments, and it doesn't stop with slashing the size of the irreplaceable Bears Ears and Grand Staircase monuments. It’s just as unbelievable that we now have to protect one of America’s most precious national treasures – the Grand Canyon – from something as dangerous and destructive as radioactive uranium mining. But that’s exactly what we have to do right now.

Thanks to an executive order from Donald Trump, the U.S. Forest Service has taken the first step toward ending a 20-year moratorium on uranium mining in the Grand Canyon watershed. Uranium mining would threaten ancient forests, Native American communities and the Colorado River – a source of drinking water for millions.

We must push back now on this dangerous and misguided proposal.

This March, Trump signed an executive order telling federal agencies to review their rules to find ways to allow more destructive oil drilling, natural gas fracking, and coal and uranium mining. In response, the U.S. Forest Service has proposed ending a ban on uranium mining in and around Grand Canyon National Park.¹ The Obama administration enacted a moratorium in 2012 that was intended to last for 20 years, but now the Trump administration could lift the moratorium at any time.

Uranium mining would threaten the land, water and communities around the Grand Canyon. The Havasupai Tribe, who live at the bottom of the canyon, use water from the canyon's seeps and springs to water their beans, corn, melon and other crops.² Mining around the canyon could release uranium pollution into the groundwater, threatening the Havasupai community's health for generations.

We know how destructive uranium can be. On the nearby Navajo Nation, where mining companies have blasted 4 million tons of uranium from more than 500 mines, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found uranium already present in newborn babies.³ Uranium exposure is linked to lung cancer, bone cancer and impaired kidney function, all of which have plagued Navajo people around the mines.⁴

Uranium mining in the Grand Canyon could also threaten the health of people hundreds of miles away. The Colorado River, fed by the watershed, supplies water to 40 million people in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Phoenix and other cities.⁵ It is unconscionable to risk human health by re-opening the Grand Canyon to mining uranium.

The Forest Service has admitted that the federal government will receive no revenue from any uranium mining that happens. Rather than saving money, reversing the ban on mining would actually force taxpayers to shell out funds for pro-mining studies.To get rid of the ban, the administration would have to undertake environmental studies that try to refute the scientific findings that uranium is harmful to local wildlife and communities.⁶

The Grand Canyon ecosystem is unique and incredibly complex. The Obama administration enacted a 20-year ban in part because 20 years is the estimated time required to complete an Environmental Impact Statement on such a large-scale ecosystem.⁷ Now the Trump administration wants to barrel ahead without any understanding of the harm that could be caused.

Tell Congress: No biometric surveillance at airports

As millions of people face long airport lines and invasive security screenings over the holidays, Congress is considering a bill that would turn this annual ritual into a much more alarming intrusion of privacy. The innocent-sounding TSA Modernization Act (S. 1872) directs the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to start deploying facial recognition and other biometric technology in airports. If the bill passes, the TSA would use this data to track, store and share information about our movements as we travel. Although Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents already use facial recognition screening on passengers on certain international flights, this bill would dramatically step up surveillance of innocent people.1 If it passes, the TSA and CBP would start deploying biometric technology – things like fingerprinting, retina scans and facial recognition – at checkpoints, screen lanes, bag drops and boarding areas.2 This has big implications for our privacy and civil liberties. Although these agencies are supposed to delete facial images after 14 days, they can keep and even share them with other local, state and federal authorities.3 Facial recognition technology has problems with accuracy – especially for non-white people, who are much more likely to be targeted for surveillance.4 But even if the technology improves, dramatically increasing government surveillance is dangerous. There is no guarantee that data won't be hacked by thieves or foreign governments, misused by rogue government employees, or used to spy on activists or dissenters. This very personal kind of surveillance could become increasingly ubiquitous. The Department of Homeland Security is considering facial recognition drones, which could be used at interior checkpoints – anywhere within 100 miles of a border.5 About two-thirds of Americans live within that area, making "border security" a meaningless term that allows the government to conduct surveillance on anyone at any time.6 We cannot allow unaccountable government agencies to slowly erode our civil liberties. Last week, Trump's Federal Communications Commission (FCC) tried to kill the open internet. They ignored millions of Americans to end the internet as we know it and give big cable companies control of what we say and do online. But this fight isn't over. Congress has the authority to overturn the FCC's vote. Congress can use a "resolution of disapproval" to reverse this disastrous decision and restore the rules that protect the open internet.1 In both the House and Senate, members of Congress are planning to introduce these resolutions – now we need to get others to sign on. Millions of Americans called on the FCC to keep the internet working the way it is now – instead of letting big cable companies control what all Americans see, say and do online. But Trump's FCC Chairman Ajit Pai ignored us, and on Dec. 14, the FCC rushed to kill net neutrality. The agency dismissed the fact that the public comment process was corrupted by millions of fake comments and ignored requests to delay or cancel the vote from 18 state attorneys general, Republican and Democratic members of Congress, the creator of the internet, and of course millions of people who depend on the internet every day.2 Congress has the power and the responsibility to right this wrong. Thanks to the Congressional Review Act, Congress can review new regulations – in this case, the FCC's Orwellian-sounding “Restoring Internet Freedom” rule – and overrule them by passing a joint resolution of disapproval.3 Republicans in Congress used the process earlier this year when they repealed important broadband privacy protections. And in the Senate, even the minority party can force a resolution of disapproval to a vote – making every senator go on the record for or against net neutrality. Losing the open internet is particularly harmful for communities of color, who rely on the open internet to organize, create economic opportunity and fight back against oppression.4 More than 80 percent of Americans support net neutrality,5 and more than 1 million people called Congress in the last month alone, asking their representatives to save net neutrality. Free speech and civil rights champions throughout history have faced setbacks, but they did not back down. The fight for a free and open internet is no different. We will continue to fight until we restore the rules that protect the internet as a platform for free speech, organizing, innovation and community building. People power continues to build on Chase Bank and the KXL pipeline

JPMorgan Chase has got to be feeling the heat, because you answered the call to action! Over 2,000 of you called JPMorgan Chase to tell them to #defundtarsands and to cut ties with TransCanada, the company behind the Keystone XL pipeline.

And yet, late on Friday, JPMorgan Chase and 18 other banks renewed their support for TransCanada by extending two credit facilities totalling $1.5 billion. As the lead bank on both of these loans, JPMorgan Chase continues to provide TransCanada with the money it needs for its business, including its headline project, Keystone XL. This is unacceptable — but we knew this fight wouldn’t be easy.

JPMorgan Chase is a leading funder of TransCanada — and the #1 Wall Street bankroller of tar sands oil, one of the dirtiest fossil fuels on the planet. They are the biggest bank on Wall Street, and their investments in tar sands and extreme fossil fuels run deep. It’s going to take sustained people power and continued actions from this incredible network to move this corporate giant away from fossil fuels and towards honoring Indigenous rights and climate stability. Persistence is how we win.

Since the Nebraska decision that re-routed TransCanada’s Keystone XL pipeline, almost 45,000 people have signed the petition to JPMorgan Chase, demanding the bank stop funding TransCanada.


On top of all that, on December 7 a small group of water protectors made their way to The Plaza Hotel in New York City to the Wells Fargo Thought Leadership Forum, an exclusive gathering of over 1,000 of the world’s largest investors. The water protectors attempted to deliver the petition with your signatures to Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan Chase’s CEO. These peaceful activists were forcibly ejected — but our collective message was heard loud and clear: NO KXL. Defund tar sands.

When more than 2,000 of you called JPMorgan Chase’s head business office and customer service line, here are some of the things you said:

• “I had been a Chase customer since 1964, but closed my accounts because of their addiction to funding the non-sustainable fossil fuel industry.”
• “I no longer use my Chase credit card and have advised my financial advisor to take out my investments with JPMorgan. I was trying to say this when I was cut off!”
• “I encouraged funding for green energy as opposed to tar sands.”

We’re going to have to keep speaking up, because this fight to stop the KXL pipeline is far from over. TransCanada is expected to make their final investment decision this month, formally deciding whether or not to move forward on the project — read more about what that means here. RAN intends to intervene at every key financial decision point to demand that JPMorgan Chase cut ties with TransCanada and end funding for tar sands.

Republicans in Washington think they’re on the verge of passing their tax scam. Tell JPMorgan Chase and BlackRock: Stop financing Amazon destruction

The petition to JPMorgan Chase and BlackRock, Inc. reads: "Fossil fuel operations that you invest in are actively violating indigenous rights in the Amazon and worsening our climate crisis. According to a stunning new report by Amazon Watch, both firms have large financial stakes in at least three companies drilling for oil in the Amazon, which are posing a serious threat to biodiversity and the health and welfare of indigenous people and furthering runaway climate change.1 Companies that drill in the Amazon wouldn't be able to continue operations without the backing of these massive banks and investment firms. It's time for us to call on these financial institutions to divest completely from dirty and dangerous fossil fuel operations immediately. VIDEO on Amazon Crude  Despite their continued public lip service to social and environmental corporate responsibility, the funding provided by JPMorgan Chase and BlackRock to companies that drill for oil and gas in the Amazon is causing untold destruction to the environment and the health and livelihoods of the indigenous people living there. According to the Amazon Watch report, one block in the Peruvian Amazon owned by Frontera Energy, a controversial Canadian-based crude oil and gas company, is "infamous for its antiquated, leaky pipeline infrastructure” and its “legacy of dumping billions of gallons of toxic production waters and hundreds of oil spills have left lagoons with oil, contaminated animals, dead fish, cultural knowledge loss, mistreatment of men, women and children."2 Momentum to force financial institutions to divest from fossil fuel projects is growing. Massive public pressure by CREDO members and our progressive allies help pressure Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo to stop funding the global coal industry.3 And recently, the World Bank announced it would stop funding upstream oil and gas projects in the developing world.4 With the United States leaving the Paris climate agreement at the hands of Donald Trump, it's now more imperative than ever that these massive private financial institutions join with the rest of the global community to stop financing oil and gas drilling. Last week, Trump's Federal Communications Commission (FCC) tried to kill the open internet. They ignored millions of Americans to end the internet as we know it and give big cable companies control of what we say and do online. But this fight isn't over. Congress has the authority to overturn the FCC's vote. Congress can use a "resolution of disapproval" to reverse this disastrous decision and restore the rules that protect the open internet.1 In both the House and Senate, members of Congress are planning to introduce these resolutions – now we need to get others to sign on. Millions of Americans called on the FCC to keep the internet working the way it is now – instead of letting big cable companies control what all Americans see, say and do online. But Trump's FCC Chairman Ajit Pai ignored us, and on Dec. 14, the FCC rushed to kill net neutrality. The agency dismissed the fact that the public comment process was corrupted by millions of fake comments and ignored requests to delay or cancel the vote from 18 state attorneys general, Republican and Democratic members of Congress, the creator of the internet, and of course millions of people who depend on the internet every day.2 Congress has the power and the responsibility to right this wrong. Thanks to the Congressional Review Act, Congress can review new regulations – in this case, the FCC's Orwellian-sounding “Restoring Internet Freedom” rule – and overrule them by passing a joint resolution of disapproval.3 Republicans in Congress used the process earlier this year when they repealed important broadband privacy protections. And in the Senate, even the minority party can force a resolution of disapproval to a vote – making every senator go on the record for or against net neutrality. Free speech and civil rights champions throughout history have faced setbacks, but they did not back down. The fight for a free and open internet is no different. We will continue to fight until we restore the rules that protect the internet as a platform for free speech, organizing, innovation and community building.
