Urge Sen. Sinema to support the COVID relief bill and raising the Minimum Wage

 

Where is our other "Democrat" Senator when we need her?

Last week, the House of Representatives voted to pass a big, bold COVID relief bill that includes survival checks, expanded unemployment insurance, and other key lifesaving policies. The bill will soon be making its way to the Senate floor for further debate, amendments, and a vote. Senator Kyrsten Sinema has said that she doesn’t support elements of the current COVID package—specifically, she doesn't support raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour.

We can’t afford to let Sen. Sinema water down this bill. She must join the vast majority of Democrats—and Americans overall—who are fully supportive of getting Biden's entire $1.9 trillion COVID relief package passed, so that Americans who need support to survive this crisis can get it as soon as possible.

Now is not the time to reduce the amount of COVID relief. Millions of people are relying on our elected officials to deliver robust relief as they struggle to make ends meet.

And we need to make sure Sen. Sinema knows this.

Any day now, the House of Representatives will vote on the Raise the Wage Act of 2019, which would immediately bump the minimum wage and raise it to $15 by 2024.3 Preschool teachers, fast-food workers, bank tellers and working parents – millions of Americans would benefit immediately, some by as much as $3,500 a year.4 Corporate Democrats are siding with Trump Republicans against a raise for one in four workers, and we're running out of time.1,2 Trump Republicans are staying loyal to Wall Street and opposing the bill. But so are many corporate Democrats, who are siding with big businesses and bad bosses against their own constituents. We need to raise our voices immediately. No one benefits more from raising the minimum wage than women and people of color forced into low-wage jobs. Forty percent of Black workers and 34% of Latinx workers would see a pay increase under this legislation. Nearly 56% who would get a raise are women.6 The Raise the Wage Act would eliminate the tipped wage so that even employees who get tips, like restaurant servers, are guaranteed a fair wage – a change studies show benefits workers. It would eliminate loopholes businesses use to underpay workers. Most importantly, it would peg the minimum wage to the median wage so the minimum wage stops slipping in value.7  If we don't fight for it, corporate Democrats will hand Trump yet another victory. Boosting the minimum wage would also create jobs by injecting more money into local economies. Restaurants continue to thrive even in cities that raised the minimum wage, and more than 90% of those who would benefit are adults.5 Every Trump Republican ‒ or corporate Democrat ‒ talking point on the minimum wage is a lie to disguise their alliance with predatory businesses. Trickle-down shills have 3 arguments against increasing the minimum wage: Jobs will disappear, businesses will go bankrup, and the price of goods will skyrocket. Wrong! These are claims are really just intimidation tactics masquerading as economic theory.

For decades, GOP trickle-down stooges have fed you lies about the minimum wage. But here are the facts -- since Seattle raised its minimum wage to $15 an hour:

• Instead of workers losing jobs, they reported more job stability.
• Instead of shops and restaurants going out of business, workers finally had money to spend and contribute to the local economy.
• There was no overall impact of the minimum wage on restaurant prices. Period. And there was no overall impact of the minimum wage on grocery prices. Period.

Why does Seattle’s county have more restaurants now than at any point in its history?

It’s because those workers who got a raise now have more money to spend in the city around them. Those restaurant workers are eating in more restaurants. They’re buying more groceries. They’re buying more clothes and cars. That increased consumer demand is creating jobs, and more than paying for the increased minimum wage. The $15 minimum wage established a positive feedback loop that created growth in Seattle by including more people in the economy.

In other words, it worked exactly as intended. And it can work in cities and states around the country.
