Imagine Donald Trump writing a script for every news anchor in America to read on the air. If you saw the chilling viral video of the Sinclair Broadcast Group, you can imagine it all too easily. News anchors from many of Sinclair's 193 local broadcast stations mechanically read the same text warning about "fake news" on other stations.1
Forcing journalists to spread suspicion about other journalists is not normal. This is a wake-up call about the extreme right-wing bias and lack of journalistic independence of Sinclair's massive right-wing media empire. And unless the Federal Communications Commission or Department of Justice stops Sinclair's proposed merger with Tribune Media, that network will get even larger.
Sinclair has a long history of force-feeding local stations “must-run” conservative segments from its national headquarters. The company’s disturbing track record includes:2,3,4
It should come as no surprise then that as soon as Trump entered the White House, he met with Sinclair's CEO to talk about "potential FCC rule changes" to help the company.5 Since then, Trump's FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has pushed through a series of radical rule changes to help out Sinclair. Among other sweetheart deals, Pai scrapped FCC rules on media ownership to allow Sinclair – already the biggest television operator in the country – to acquire another network and grow even bigger.
If they succeed, Trump and Pai could permanently change the U.S. media landscape. The proposed mega-merger that would leave Sinclair with an incredible 223 stations covering 72 percent of U.S. households.6
No one media company should have that much power.

Fifty senators signed on to the resolution of disapproval to overturn the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and save net neutrality.1 We need just one more.
If Sens. McCain and Flake sign on, the resolution will pass the Senate and move on to the House.

When the FCC voted to kill the open internet, they ignored millions of Americans and gave big cable companies control of what we say and do online.
But this fight isn't over. Congress has the authority to overturn the FCC's vote. Congress can use a "resolution of disapproval" to reverse this disastrous decision and restore the rules that protect the open internet.2
Thanks to the Congressional Review Act, Congress can review new regulations (in this case, the FCC's Orwellian-sounding “Restoring Internet Freedom” rule) and overrule them by passing a joint resolution of disapproval. Republicans in Congress used the process last year when they repealed important broadband privacy protections. And in the Senate, even the minority party can force a resolution of disapproval to a vote – making every senator go on the record for or against net neutrality.
Trump's FCC chair has shown that he is in the pocket of Big Telecom companies. But unlike the FCC, our senators are elected and they must answer to us.

Sign the petition: Tell Congress to restore net neutrality!

Senator Chuck Schumer has announced that he’ll force a vote on reinstating net neutrality protections.(1) A number of Republicans have at least claimed to support net neutrality in the past. So it may be tough to win this vote -- but not impossible.
Either way, the vote will keep this issue alive and put members of Congress on record: do they support Trump’s attack on the open Internet? That sets the stage for us to make this a campaign issue in 2018 and win the majority we need to truly protect net neutrality. Will you sign our petition calling on Congress to use the Congressional Review Act to restore net neutrality?

The Congressional Review Act is a powerful tool that allows Congress to undo any regulation within 60 days of the regulation's passing. Congress must now pass a "resolution of disapproval" through both houses of Congress.(2) If it passes with enough votes to overcome a presidential veto, the FCC's decision to repeal net neutrality will be overturned.
The FCC's repeal of net neutrality protections won’t go into effect for another two months. We just lost an important battle -- but it’s important to remember that in the history of the fight to protect net neutrality, we’ve beaten the odds over and over again when unexpected numbers of people from across the political spectrum get involved, changing the political calculus.
If enough people keep pressuring Congress, Republicans will start to fear being on the wrong side of public opinion on yet another issue. And if the telecom companies continue to see a massive public outcry, they’ll be more cautious about how quickly they start destroying the open Internet.
We may need to regain majorities in Congress -- and perhaps the presidency -- to afford net neutrality the protection it truly deserves. But we can keep the issue alive until then, and use it to help us win.

The FCC will vote to kill net neutrality this Thursday, but Congress can stop them. We have good intel suggesting there are Republican lawmakers close to speaking out to stop the FCC in Arizona and we need to activate local people interested in net neutrality to help make that happen. I urge you to stop the FCC's plan to end net neutrality *before* the FCC's December 14th vote.
I don't want ISPs to have the power to block websites, slow them down, give some sites an advantage over others, split the Internet into "fast lanes" for companies that pay and "slow lanes" for the rest, or force me to buy special "tiers" to access the sites and services I choose. But that's exactly what the FCC plan would do. Please read it:

Blocking & throttling by ISPs is a serious problem. Comcast has throttled Netflix, AT&T blocked FaceTime, Time Warner Cable throttled the popular game League of Legends, and Verizon admitted it will introduce fast lanes for sites that pay-and slow lanes for everyone else-if the FCC lifts the rules. This hurts consumers and businesses large and small.
If some companies can pay ISPs to have their content load faster, startups and small businesses that can't pay those fees won't be able to compete. This will kill the open marketplace that has enabled millions of small businesses and created America’s 5 most valuable companies. Without strong net neutrality protections, Internet providers will effectively be able to impose a tax on every sector of the American economy.
Moreover, under Chairman Pai's plan, ISPs will be able to make it more difficult to access political speech that they don't like. They'll be able to charge fees for website delivery that would make it harder for blogs, nonprofits, artists, and others who can't pay up to have their voices heard.
If the FCC passes their current order, every Internet user and business in this country will be unprotected from abuse by Internet providers, and the consequences will be dire. Please publicly support net neutrality protections by denouncing the FCC's current plan. Do whatever you can to stop Chairman Pai, to ensure that businesses and Internet users remain protected.
