Pepsi’s business partner IndoFood is one of the industry’s worst offenders.Multiple investigations have exposed a culture of disregard for environmental laws, and a feudal attitude towards its workers.

Under Nooyi’s leadership, Pepsi has tried to fool us with warm words about its palm oil commitments and the loopholes allowing Indofood to act like a bully.

The cold fact is, CEO Indra Nooyi has been trying to pass the buck on the issue for years. Pepsi profits from palm oil destruction through its Joint Venture Partnership with IndoFood.

But Indra Nooyi knows her last few weeks as CEO are crucial. She won’t want her name to be mired in a huge public campaign and media storm about palm oil scandals, while her critics and business leaders are writing up articles about her legacy.

Palm oil destruction is wreaking havoc in Southeast Asia. The Indonesian island of Borneo loses an area of forest the size of a football pitch EVERY 47 seconds. And as forests are cleared for palm oil, endangered species like orangutans and pygmy elephants lose their habitat and die.

In the last 16 years, half of Borneo’s orangutan population was wiped out.

Act Now: PepsiCo Inaction as Business Partner Destroys Tropical Forests

Today Rainforest Action Network released a report, exposing the destruction of nearly 10,000 hectares of Borneo’s forests — nearly 40 square miles — by palm oil companies associated with one of PepsiCo’s prominent business partners, a company called the Salim Group.

The forests destroyed were some of Borneo’s incredibly important peat forests: massive carbon sinks that safely store greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere. These peat forests are absolutely critical in the fight against global climate change.

PepsiCo has continued its partnership despite repeated well documented reports of destroyed ecosystems. Once again, PepsiCo has failed to stop the havoc caused by its partner. Meanwhile, people and the planet continue to suffer the consequences of its inaction.

Demand accountability! Tell PepsiCo to cut ties with companies causing climate chaos.

In 2015, in response to public criticism, PepsiCo revised its palm oil policy but left an exemption for its joint venture partners in the Salim Group. The Salim Group makes PepsiCo snack food products in Indonesia. These latest investigations show that once again, PepsiCo continues its dirty business with destructive companies while people and the planet suffer the consequences.
