This is the single most important thing you can do to help save the open Internet. Similar events were crucial to passing the Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution in the Senate, which would restore net neutrality protections gutted by the FCC. Now we need 218 Representatives to do the same in the House. 175 representatives have already signed on—but your representative is not yet one of them!

Urgent Action requested: GOP rushing cruel tax bill through both houses - before people have time to protest

The GOP is rushing their cruel tax bill through both houses. I know that the House passed their tax bill, and the Senate's tax bill has been rushed through committee. I am contacting everyone today.

In addition to giving HUGE tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans and corporations, the GOP tax plan has a provision to allow drilling the the Arctic Wildlife Refuge and another provision that cuts healthcare for 12 million Americans. The plan actual RAISES taxes for married couples who make $19050 or less by 2%. What the heck! How are they supposed to survive on that? Some middle class workers will get a small tax cut that will be phased out in five years. But the tax cuts for the rich will last FOREVER. The GOP is giving tax cuts to the people who need them the least on the backs of our most vulnerable citizens. That's just not right!

Does the #GOPTaxPlan treat corporations and individuals the same in terms of who gets to keep deductions and who doesn’t? Nope, not even close.

Dear Representative McSally,

Please, do not include a provision to drill the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the tax plan. We need a world with wild places. If you drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, you will put that fragile ecosystem at risk. One by one animal species are going extinct because their habitats are being destroyed by the fossil fuel industry. Do you want leave a planet with no animals for our children? An oil leak would endanger yet another water source. We can live without oil; we can't live without water.

Yes, we need reliable energy. But if we are already being forced to drill in our protected wilderness, then we must be running out. We should incentivize the development of solar and wind energy NOW. Energy companies should get incentives to develop the storage capabilities needed to have reliable energy, not to assault our land, air and water. Let's not wait until there are no wild places left, no animals, no clean water or even trees to make the air we breath. Let's incentivize the development of clean energy now. Clean energy provides more jobs than all of the fossil fuel industries combined. America should be leading the way in clean energy - for the health of our children and the economy.

Please, stop the drilling at the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge now. Let's leave American beautiful and healthy for our children.

At this very moment, oil industry allies in Congress are trying to push through a package of bills that would amount to a massive giveaway to the oil industry at the expense of whales, dolphins and coastal communities. Simply put: This bill would put marine life in greater danger and increase the risk of oil spills in our waters. I am writing to urge you to oppose H.R. 4239, a package of bills to expedite dangerous oil and gas exploration and drilling in our oceans, risking our coastal economies, livelihoods and marine life.

The ASTRO Act is an extreme measure that would encourage expanded offshore drilling, weaken or eliminate safeguards that protect coastal communities and oceans, and provide shortsighted giveaways to the oil industry, including rolling back vital environmental and safety protections relating to drilling in the Arctic Ocean.

This bill is a blatant attempt to speed up dirty and dangerous offshore drilling in new areas and to ignore coastal community opposition.  Through fishing, recreation and tourism, healthy ocean ecosystems along the Atlantic Coast generate $95 billion in gross domestic product and support nearly 1.4 million jobs, and on the West Coast, more than $22 billion in GDP and upwards of 455,000 jobs, annually. These industries serve as economic drivers for our entire nation. Offshore oil and gas exploration and development would be in direct conflict with their long-term sustainability.

The ASTRO Act includes the provisions of H.R. 3133, which would fast-track seismic airgun blasting — an extremely loud and dangerous process used to search for oil and gas deposits deep below the ocean’s surface — and other industrial activities in the ocean that can harm whales, dolphins, manatees and other marine mammals. This provision would severely weaken long-standing protections in the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) for these iconic species. Scientists have shown that seismic airgun blasting can also harm fish, shellfish and sea turtles.

Eliminating safeguards for dolphins and whales in the pursuit of expanded offshore drilling is shortsighted and wrong. A May 2017 poll found that 76 percent of Americans support protecting marine mammals from threats, including injury and death resulting from offshore oil and gas drilling; and 73 percent of Americans support the MMPA.

I urge you – as my voice in Congress – to oppose proposals to expand offshore drilling and fast-track seismic airgun blasting at the expense of cherished marine life. Our treasured beach destinations are valued for their clean, oil-free beaches, vibrant fishing and tourism-dependent economies. We all rely on clean water, beautiful beaches and fish that are safe to eat.

This morning, Congressional leaders finally showed the American people their tax bill -- the one they were supposed to show us yesterday, and have been talking about behind closed doors for months.

So why the delay?

They've been afraid to show us what's inside ... and now, we know why.

We already knew this plan would cut taxes for rich people and corporations, and that's still true. But to pay for these unnecessary cuts, the money has to come from somewhere -- and Congress and the White House want it to come from hardworking middle-class families.

A FOIA request is the foundation for transparency in government, and is one of the main pillars which make us, the American people, the "boss" of our government and not the other way around. This transparency keeps our politicians and government workers more honest, as they know that their actions can be released to the press or private citizen at any time.

What a week.

All in one day, just prior to the terrible Hurricane Harvey crashing into Texas, we found out that:
1. There will be an announcement about the end of protections for Dreamers;
2.  Trump finalized text on an official transgender ban for military service;
3.  Racist and convicted criminal former Sheriff Joe Arpaio was pardoned.

THURSDAY a partnership of groups will be meeting to "welcome" Rep. McSally at an event featuring her.  Once again the event is a closed, $60 "pay-to-play" which is not open to regular constituents.  Instead, we will be meeting at the intersection of Skyline Dr. and Campbell to "welcome" her.

Requests Secretary Consider State, Local, and Public Comment while Reviewing National Monuments as Directed by Executive Order

TUCSON – U.S. Representative Martha McSally today sent a letter strongly urging U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to take stakeholders’ input and public comments into account before making recommendations to rescind, reduce, or alter several of Arizona’s National Monuments.

“Arizona has more National Monuments than any other state. In addition to the pristine and unique geological formations, extensive forests and diverse wildlife found at these Monuments, these National Park units attract thousands of visitors annually providing economic activity and jobs in our state,” wrote Congresswoman McSally in the letter. “As you consider the remaining Arizona Monuments under review, I request that you place the highest level of care on state and local stakeholders’ input and the public comments you received before making your recommendations.”

On April 26, 2017 the President issued an Executive Order directing Secretary Zinke to conduct a thorough review of certain National Monuments designated under the Antiquities Act and make recommendations about their designations. The Executive Order required the Secretary to particularly focus on lands that were created after January 1, 1996 that are larger than 100,000 acres.

The Secretary began reviewing National lands in April 2017. On August 4, 2017 he issued his first recommendation on an Arizona National Park. Of the 27 National Monuments currently under his review, Ironwood Forest, Vermilion Cliffs, and the Sonoran Desert in Arizona have not yet received a recommendation from Secretary Zinke.

In response to the President’s April 26, 2017 Executive Order directing you to review National Monument designations, I request that you carefully consider the impact of your recommendations on Arizona.

Arizona has more National Monuments than any other state, and the President’s Executive Order which directs you to recommend rescissions, reductions, or alterations to National Monuments over 100,000 acres created since 1996, will have a particularly profound impact in Arizona and on my constituents. As you are aware, four National Monuments in Arizona—Ironwood Forest, Vermilion Cliffs, Grand Canyon-Parashant, and Sonoran Desert—were included in your initial review. In addition to the pristine and unique geological formations, extensive forests and diverse wildlife found at these Monuments, these National Park units attract thousands of visitors annually providing economic activity and jobs in our state.

You have recently made recommendations concerning several of the 27 National Monuments under review, including the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument in Arizona, and I appreciate your thoughtfulness. Here is my personal response:

Thank you for forwarding me this letter. Please, thank Representative McSally for writing it.

I hope this means that she is reconsidering her position about cutting back regulations like the Clean Water Act that protect our streams and national parks.

While a new mine may create 260 jobs, ecotourism provides over 3000 jobs in Pima County alone. 43 million people visited Arizona in 2016 who collectively spent $21.2 billion in the state. The money spent by visitors supports jobs and generates tax revenue. The $3.09 billion in 2016 tax revenue equals an annual tax savings of $1,186 for every Arizona household and supported 184,200 industry jobs. Who wants to view the Grand Canyon through a grey haze.

Drive down the back roads of Arizona and you will see one ugly boarded up ghost town after another and huge pits. While the jobs are temporary, the damage to the land and water last much longer.

In addition to polluting our air and water, extracting coal uses up water. We just can't afford to use up all that water. As more and more states experience droughts, there will be even more competition for our already depleted water supply.

It's time that we transition out of dirty coal and towards more sustainable clean energy. Solar energy creates more high paying jobs than all of the fossil fuel industries combined. Protecting our public lands and waterways is vital for the future of Arizona and our economy.

Confronting Rep. McSally on her position on Dodd-Frank

"Our "pop-up" rally last week was very successful, and although most of us were turned away from attending the meeting with Martha McSally, one was able to get in and record her speech.

Most of us have been calling, tweeting, sitting in on meetings and writing to her and her staff in order to get answers to our questions about her positions. We have also heard the refrain, over and over again: she doesn't have an opinion on that at this time, I haven't talked to her about that, etc. But in that meeting with out-of-district bankers/donors, she was very free with opinions and reasons for her votes.

When we meet with Julie Katsel, staffer to Sen. Flake, we are informed of the Senator's positions, even if she knows we won't like them. She talks about the trust between constituent and Representative. What McSally has done is destroy this trust. How can we ever believe her when she says she doesn't have an opinion, or when the staffers have no answer? How can we look her people in the eye when she is on tape mocking us in a room full of donors?

Tomorrow morning we will be saying NO to HR10, the CHOICE Act. This bill aims to roll back consumer protections that Dodd-Frank gave us following the Great Recession. Now, maybe Dodd-Frank needs some tweaks, but her gleeful scorched earth approach is NOT the answer.

Dear Ms. Segal,

Thank you for contacting me regarding your support the Endangered Species Act. I appreciate your thoughts on this important issue.

As you may know, the Endangered Species Act was enacted to increase protection for, and to provide for the recovery of, vanishing wildlife and vegetation. Under ESA, species of plants and animals can be listed as endangered or threatened according to assessments of their risk of extinction. Once a species is listed, powerful legal tools are available to aid its recovery and protect its habitat.

Under the ESA, species are to be listed as threatened or endangered based solely on the best available scientific information, without regard to economic considerations. In many cases, species are protected as subspecies located in only a specific portion of their range – which is why many types of salmon are protected even while salmon is available for our consumption. In the past, the Obama Administration had delisted some wolves from the protections of the Endangered Species Act, allowing them to be hunted.

Congress is faced with the task of balancing these competing interests by protecting wildlife and permitting economic activity and use of lands on which certain wildlife is found. Rest assured that I will keep your support for the ESA in mind should any related legislation come before the full House of Representatives for a vote.

Thank you for contacting me with your concerns for H.J.Res. 46, a joint resolution disapproving a 2016 National Park Service rule addressing non-federal oil and gas rights within National Park Service units outside of Alaska. I appreciate hearing your thoughts on this important issue.

As you may know, H.J.Res 46 was introduced by Rep. Paul Gosar (AZ-04) on January 30, 2017. This bill would nullify a rule from the National Park Service (NPS) expanding control over 319 new state or private oil and gas operations on NPS properties. This bill was referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources. While I do not sit on that committee, rest assured I will keep your thoughts in mind should it come before the full House of Representatives for a vote.

Resistance Recess Events

As you know, Congress is now on their two week Easter recess which means Resistance Recess Events.  Indivisible also has BIG plans for fun and unique events.

Will there be a McSally sighting? Will McCain ramp up support for independent investigations? Will Flake give a town hall in Tucson? It is all on the table in the next two weeks!

EVENTS:

SATURDAY, APRIL 15th from 10AM-11AM at Sen. McCain's office at 407 West Congress St. 

Indivisible is hosting a Tax March/Rally. Come dressed in your finest ballgown or top hat to appeal to the fine tastes of those funded by the deep pocketed Koch Brothers or Putin. Signs with Monopoly themes are all the rage, "Follow the Money" and "Let's see those tax returns." 

TUESDAY, APRIL 18th we are co-hosting with McSally Take A Stand, ART INSTALLATION AND MINI STAFFER ENGAGEMENT from 8AM-10AM at 4400 E. Broadway Blvd in front of Rep. McSally's office.

Indivisible will be saying NO to votes cast without statements ahead of time, NO to differences between her rhetoric and voting record and YES to transparency! Art installation centerpiece by Tucson artists will "let a little light in" in a stained glass theme, and they will have transparency sheets for you to make and display your own transparent art/letters. They will also be scheduling time blocks for people to go and talk to the front office staff about issues that they want TRANSPARENCY on.

Saturday, April 22nd at 10AM at Presidio Park. Science rally. Indivisible is not hosting, just participating.
