Speak out! President Trump "doesn’t believe" his own administration's climate report

Key federal agencies released a damning new scientific climate change report last week (yes, on Black Friday), and it lays out the truth in stark terms: Climate change is a clear and present danger to the American people, it’s getting worse, and its impacts on our country will be more and more devastating — but there’s still time to stop its most extreme effects, if we take drastic action now.

Yet even as his own scientists ring the alarm bells, President Trump is doubling down on his dangerous rollback agenda and climate change denial. Tell him he must confront this threat and lead the U.S. to the clean energy future we need — or face certain climate catastrophe.

Dear President Trump,

Your own administration's scientists recently released the Fourth National Climate Assessment, and its conclusions couldn't be clearer: Climate change caused by fossil fuels will only get worse, and the suffering of millions of Americans impacted this year by extreme flooding, devastating hurricanes, and deadly wildfires is a mere preview of the environmental crises our country will face if we continue to do nothing about it. 

As president of the United States, you are responsible for safeguarding the health and well-being of the American people. It's your duty to confront -- not deny -- this growing threat to our environment, and our nation's future. I demand that you take immediate action to drastically reduce the carbon pollution that is fueling dangerous climate change -- and lead the U.S. to the clean energy future we need in order to avert climate catastrophe.

In 2017, 79 percent of climate change coverage on broadcast television networks was about one topic: Donald Trump.1 Not the latest climate science. Not the extreme weather events already happening all around the world. The vast majority of coverage focused only on Trump's climate change denial and his steps to drag us backwards into the coal age. Thanks to this terrible coverage, almost 90 percent of Americans don’t know that there is a scientific consensus on global warming.2 When news programs don't inform Americans about the climate, we all lose. Until the media starts doing its job, we won't be able to build the political will to win the fight against climate change. Politicians at every level will be free to continue ignoring the issue and continue with the destructive policies that created this crisis. The meda accountability group Media Matters for America recently published a study looking at climate coverage in 2017 on broadcast television networks ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and Fox. Not only was 79 percent of the total climate coverage about Trump, but Trump dominated virtually all of the coverage on Sunday news shows – 94 of 95 minutes.3 News programs regularly mention that Trump rejects the reality of climate change without discussing the overwhelming scientific consensus that climate change is not only real, but that it is an urgent problem driven by the burning of fossil fuels. Programs also ignore the links between climate change and extreme weather events, public health and national security.4 The climate crisis is getting worse, and it's happening frighteningly fast. Sixteen of the 17 warmest years on record have occurred since 2001.5 Last year was the third year in a row that scientists recorded a record winter low in Arctic sea ice, and scientists also found record low sea ice in the Antarctic. 6 Carbon dioxide emissions are increasing again after being flat for three years.7 The news media has a responsibility to report accurately on the biggest environmental threat facing the planet. Having a climate change denier in the White House is no excuse to ignore the issue. In fact, Trump's dangerous policies make accurate climate coverage more critical than ever. Thanks to the activism of hundreds of thousands of people in the progressive movement  dozens of corporations have quit ALEC in recent years because of the group's extreme stances. The high-profile companies that have quit ALEC and help make it toxic include blue chip brands such as Google and eBay that called out ALEC's climate change denial. But one familiar brand continues to fund ALEC: UPS. UPS claims to be a leader in sustainable shipping and a pro-environment company, giving millions of dollars to environmental organizations, planting trees and switching to cleaner fuels.1 But this stance is completely at odds with funding ALEC, which has a long track record of promoting climate change denial2 and anti-climate policies.3 This year, one of ALEC's top agenda items is an attempt to reverse the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2009 "endangerment finding," a policy statement that acknowledges that greenhouse gases threaten human health.4 Because the endangerment finding is the legal justification for the Clean Power Plan and other government efforts to fight climate change, getting rid of it is a key priority for the anti-climate right wing.5 UPS is on ALEC's "Energy, Environment and Agriculture" task force, the pro-fossil fuel committee that will decide on the resolution at this week's meeting. If ALEC adopts the resolution to oppose the endangerment finding, state and federal legislators will use the resolution as a model to fight the endangerment finding themselves. Their ultimate goal is to block any government action on climate – a disaster for us all. UPS is funding ALEC's long-term strategy to dismantle our environmental protections and block climate action. Send a message to Scott Pruitt: Time to combat Climate Change head on

Americans are facing the climate crisis like never before. We have never before witnessed a deluge of rain like Harvey, or a North Atlantic hurricane with winds as strong as Irma. This is not normal.

Hurricanes feed on warm ocean temperatures, leading to supercharged storms that leave nothing but destruction in their wake. Yet as Americans face unimaginable suffering—tragic loss of life, homes flooded out, families evacuated and forced into shelters, entire lives turned upside down by these storms—EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt is playing politics, disrespecting their struggle during an interview with CNN by refusing to recognize the clear role the climate crisis is playing, downplaying the conversation as “insensitive.”

Take action today, and tell Administrator Pruitt: What’s “insensitive” is putting American lives at risk through denial and delay. It’s time for the climate conversation—and it’s time for climate action.

Dear Administrator Pruitt,

I am writing today out of deep concern. Your comments on CNN that discussions connecting Hurricane Irma's impending destruction and the climate crisis are "insensitive" are, to me, deeply disturbing. 

We should absolutely be focusing on helping Harvey and Irma's victims, ensuring they have access to clean water and protecting them from the dangers associated with superfund sites. However, while we take action, we also need to state firmly and clearly that climate change--and the warming ocean waters it creates--are fueling these storms and devastating Americans. 

If we do not recognize the danger, call it by name, and begin making plans for action, more Americans will lose their loved ones, their homes, and even their lives to these deadly storms. Both today's victims of extreme weather, and victims for generations to come, deserve better. 

Rather than ignoring the problem or putting the conversation off, please address the climate crisis head-on, and state clearly and without question that it is fueling these catastrophic weather events.

Tell ExxonMobil and Chevron to stop spreading climate disinformation and start taking climate action!

Later this month ExxonMobil and Chevron, two companies responsible for decades of heat-trapping emissions and deception on climate science, will be in the spotlight as they hold their annual shareholder meetings. These meetings are a critical opportunity to turn up the heat and demand that these fossil fuel giants stop blocking climate action.

Since the 1980s, these companies have hid behind trade associations and front groups, such as the American Legislative Exchange Council, to oppose common-sense emissions reductions and confuse the public with manufactured dissent and debate on climate change. Many of ExxonMobil’s and Chevron’s own shareholders are calling on them to stop spreading climate deception and start taking responsibility for the damage they’ve done to our planet. We need your help to drive this message home.

We cannot afford to let the fossil fuel industry continue “business as usual.” The safety of our communities depends on these companies facing reality and the global call to climate action.
