Request to Speak by 8 a.m. Monday on tax breaks for the rich and gun lobbyist and a bad environmental bill

HB2656, sponsored by Jake Hoffman (R-12), would ban financial institutions and their contractors from "discriminating" against someone based on their political affiliation or social or environmental values. This would force the continuation of the Trump-era push to ensure that polluters and gun makers get equal access to financial services. This is absurd. Unlike race, religion or gender, someone’s political opinion isn’t covered by fair lending statute. Scheduled for House Rules Committee, Monday. OPPOSE.

SB1372, sponsored by Tyler Pace (R-25), would create a loophole allowing anyone who lives outside of Arizona to buy a vehicle free of sales tax. Currently vehicles must be shipped out of state to be eligible for a sales tax waiver, which is bad enough. Nearly 400,000 new vehicles are purchased in Arizona each year, and the average price of a vehicle is now over $40,000, meaning each tax credit would cost the general fund an average of $2500. However, this loophole is targeted to the wealthy (those who could afford to fly to Arizona, buy a car and drive it home), so the cost of the cars they purchase, and thus the cost to Arizona's general fund, is likely higher than that average. Scheduled for Senate Rules Committee, Monday. OPPOSE.

HB2166, sponsored by Steve Kaiser (R-15), would exempt guns and "firearm safety equipment" from sales tax. The sponsor calls them “necessities” and wants them subjected to the same tax rate as food. America’s self-destructive gun fetish has produced a record of home-grown violence unheard of in any other industrialized society. The bill’s fiscal note says the exemption would cost the state $6.4 million a year, most of which is the firearms exemption; the note also warns the estimate may be on the short side of what it would actually cost. Scheduled for House Rules Committee, Monday. OPPOSE.

HB2646, sponsored by Travis Grantham (R-12), would require the average fair market value of private aircraft to be tied to inflation, benchmarks that value to rates in 2019, and qualifies people who currently pay aircraft license tax if they paid more. The bill currently has no fiscal note to estimate the cost to the state general fund, and thus to taxpayers. Grantham also introduced a bill last year to waive all private planes from taxation. Scheduled for House Rules Committee, Monday. OPPOSE.

HCR2028, sponsored by Walter Blackman (R-6), would ask voters to amend the Arizona Constitution to set a minimum amount that cities and counties could collectively spend on law enforcement, adjusted only for population and inflation. Very similar to the public school spending cap that’s causing so much trouble right now. Scheduled for House Rules Committee, Monday. OPPOSE.

HCR2031, sponsored by Regina Cobb (R-5), would ask voters to amend the Arizona Constitution to make the regulation of employee benefits, including wages, a statewide issue, and ban cities and towns from further regulating them. Legislators have been trying to penalize the city of Flagstaff for years for setting a higher minimum wage than the state-mandated one. They imposed a $1.1 million fine for the city in last year’s budget. Several months ago, a judge blocked that fine from taking effect. Scheduled for House Rules Committee, Monday. OPPOSE.

Stop Republicans in Congress from gutting our earned benefit programs

he petition to Congress reads:
"Do not cut, privatize, weaken or otherwise damage Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security. You cannot pay for your disastrous tax giveaway to Wall Street and to the top 1% with our earned benefits."

Stop Republicans in Congress from gutting our earned benefit programs
Donald Trump’s Republican lapdogs in Congress recently rammed a massively unpopular, cruel and deeply corrupt Tax Scam into law. Now, Paul Ryan and the rest of the right-wing Republican leadership in Congress is gearing up to slash Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, nutrition assistance and more.1
Republican ideologues like Ryan know their Robin-Hood-in-reverse agenda to enrich their billionaire donors from Wall Street by gutting our earned benefit programs is deeply unpopular. They learned the hard way this past year how unpopular cutting Medicaid is. That is why they are predictably using made-up excuses about the deficit to smear these important programs.
We need to make it clear that any attempt to privatize, cut, weaken or damage Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security or any of our earned benefits is completely unacceptable.
Even before the Trump Tax Scam passed, Ryan was talking about his plans to gut Medicaid and Medicare in 2018. “We're going to have to get back next year at entitlement reform,” he promised last month, suddenly rediscovering a passion for the deficit after pushing trillions in tax giveaways to the ultra-wealthy.2
Medicare is a fundamental tool of economic security for more than 58 million seniors, and the program is overwhelmingly popular.3,4 And throughout last summer, activists with the disability rights organization ADAPT and others showed Republicans just how important Medicaid is in their daily lives. The majority of Medicaid beneficiaries are children and working-age adults, Medicaid spends more money on long term care for seniors and people with disabilities than anything else.5 Social Security, meanwhile, is totally funded for the next two decades – longer if everyone pays at the same rate – and the only retirement income that most Americans can count on.6

Donald Trump repeatedly pledged during the 2016 campaign not to attack Medicare, Medicaid or our Social Security system but he has since seriously undermined these programs. Ryan’s ultimate goal is to end Medicare as we know it and replace it with a privatized program.7 Now, Trump and his lapdogs in Congress are not just coming after Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, they are attacking programs like Meals on Wheels, SNAP, and other nutritional assistance that families rely on. Republicans are whipping up a fake deficit hysteria after giving massive giveaways to the rich as a Trojan horse to attack our earned benefits. We must go all out to resist any cuts.
If Ryan gets his way, folks who have been working their whole lives counting on Medicare in their retirement won’t ever be able to enroll – instead they will get a check that might help cover their premium for private insurance, if they are lucky.8 And if the Republicans are successful in their attacks on Medicare and Medicaid, they will come next for Social Security.
What’s more, our Social Security system is separate from regular taxes and not affected by the deficit.9
Republicans cannot attack our earned benefits without a major fight. More than 70 percent of Americans rely on these programs at some point in our lives, and we are not going to let Ryan, McConnell and Trump dismantle them.10

Call your representative before tomorrow's vote: Vote NO on the tax bill

Less than 72 hours ago -- on a Friday at 5:30 p.m. -- House and Senate leaders released the final version of a tax bill that will reshape the entire economy.

Tomorrow, with one working day to review more than 500 pages, your representative will likely vote on a bill that:
  • Leaves 13 million fewer Americans with health care
  • Adds $1.4 trillion to our debt
  • Gives huge breaks to millionaires and wealthy corporations
  • Ultimately makes many middle-class families pay more
This is unacceptable.

Call your representative before tomorrow's vote, and tell him or her to vote NO on this bill. OFA's call tool will connect you in just two clicks:

The Trump Tax Scam is now Trumpcare!

Make a call to key Senate Republicans: Stop Trump’s handout for the wealthy and big corporations
Donald Trump wants to reward tax-dodging corporations and the ultra-wealthy with a huge tax handout while raising taxes on everyone else and slashing the social safety net. Cruel and craven Republicans in the House voted this month to pass his bill, but a few key Senate Republicans have the power to stop it from becoming law and they need to hear from you. Can you make a call today?

Stop Trump's Tax Scam
Recently cruel and craven Republicans in the House voted in favor of a huge giveaway to corporations and the wealthiest Americans.
Now the fight turns to the Senate, where the bill would sneakily repeal part of the Affordable Care Act.1 Senate Republicans may try to rush a vote on the Trump-Tax Scam-turned-Trumpcare as early as this week.2 The Trump tax scam would make deep cuts to the social safety net and raise taxes on middle- and lower-income families – all while giving Trump and his wealthy friends trillions in handouts.3,4
As we showed when we stopped Trumpcare, our collective action makes a difference, and now that the Trump Tax Scam is Trumpcare all over again, we must show up in force to stop this dumpster fire of a bill in its tracks.
Republicans are desperate to deliver a win to their corporate donors, and the Trump Tax Scam is a massive handout to corporations and the wealthiest Americans. They are trying to pull the wool over their constituents' eyes with the false promise of tax cuts for working Americans, but in reality the Trump Tax Scam would be devastating.5
The Trump tax scam would:
  • Repeal the deduction for state and local taxes, used by the majority of middle-class taxpayers, and strain budgets for local services. 6
  • Allow massive amounts of wealth to accumulate untaxed by raising the cap and then eliminating the estate tax – a tax paid only by the ultra-wealthy.7
  • Slash the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to just 20 percent – less than what most workers would pay.8
  • Allow tax dodgers to get away with refusing to pay their fair share by eliminating the alternative minimum tax, which has been a safeguard against the ultra-wealthy like Donald Trump paying virtually nothing in taxes.9
  • Sneakily undermine health care by repealing the individual mandate.10
  • Increase the burden of health care costs by eliminating the deduction for out-of-pocket medical expenses.11
  • Strike an intentional blow to abortion rights and lay the groundwork for banning abortion outright by enshrining the language “unborn child” into the federal tax code.12
  • Make higher education even more unaffordable by eliminating the deduction for student loan interest and ending exemptions for graduate students paid for research work or teaching while in school.13
  • Reduce incentives for consumers to purchase clean energy vehicles.14
  • Jeopardize the fragile natural environment of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge by opening it up to drilling in order to pay for corporate tax handouts.15
Republicans need to know that going along with Trump’s greedy and cruel tax plan will be devastating for everyone but the 1%. CREDO activists made more than 10,000 calls to key House Republicans, and two of them voted the right way.16 We need just three Republicans to stand up to Trump in the Senate. Will you call now to tell them we are watching and that it's unacceptable for them to do anything less than fully resist Trump’s tax scam?

Fight for a humane tax plan and healthcare: Share your personal story with these maverick senators

First, Senator Ron Johnson, an arch-conservative from Wisconsin, came out against the Republican Party's misguided plan to cut taxes for the wealthy and sabotage Obamacare.1 Then, 13 Republicans voted against the House tax bill. Now, Republican Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski seem to be leaning our way, and a new analysis shows the Senate tax plan will actually RAISE taxes on the poor and the middle class--a huge political blow to the bill's chances.2,3

If Sens. Collins, Murkowski, and Johnson vote no, the bill is dead. That's why we're making Senate phones ring off the hook in Washington, D.C., and organizing our members in key states to tell their stories about what this tax DEFORM plan would mean for them.

Desperate for a win, Senator Mitch McConnell and Trump are pushing to pass their rich-person giveaway when they come back after Thanksgiving. That means we've got just one week to raise hell in Maine, Arizona, Nevada, and Alaska--the same kind of organizing that helped us kill Trumpcare earlier this year.

But just like this summer, we have to keep the pressure on senators from these states. We've got the cold hard facts: 13 million will lose their health insurance.4 Americans earning less than $75,000 a year will see their taxes INCREASE.5

We have to back up those facts with the stories of real people, real voters, who can't afford for this dangerous tax plan to become law.

Dear Senator McCain,

I live in Tucson where so many of your constituents are living paycheck to paycheck. They are one medical emergency from going bankrupt and losing their homes. Everyday I see more and more homeless people - some vets, some people who had to quit their jobs to care for a sick loved one, some who had a medical emergency. I'm urging you to take care of vulnerable Tucsonans. It is just heartless to pass a huge tax cut for the wealthiest Americans on the back of the most vulnerable. Why are you raising taxes on married couples who make less that $19050 a year? When my husband left me, I struggled to get by on spousal support. No one would hire me because I had been a stay at home mom. I could have easily become homeless. So many of us are just one emergency away from being homeless.

My parents in Missouri are just getting by on their limited retirement plan and social security.  My dad recently had gallbladder surgery. He could not have had that surgery without the help of Medicare.  They finally had to get a home health aide. That is also paid for by Medicare. This immoral tax plan even cuts the dependent deduction that enables families to take care of their elderly parents at home AND the deduction for their medical expenses. How are people supposed to get by?

Senator McCain, please, don't take away our healthcare or make it even harder on the poor. I know you are a moral man; vote your conscious. Vote no on that cruel tax bill.

Call your representative today and tell them to vote NO on Trump’s tax scam

Yesterday, Republican leaders released their tax plan: a government-funded handout to millionaires, billionaires, and big corporations -- at the expense of everyone else.

Paul Ryan and House Republicans delayed releasing their plan for days because they knew it wasn’t ready for prime time. But now it’s here, and it’s worse than we expected.

This half-baked, “trickle-down” plan would make rising income inequality worse -- a lot worse. Paul Ryan knows his plan is unpopular, so he is rushing toward a vote. Your representative could be the key to stopping it -- but they need to hear from you.

Click here to call your representative today and tell them to vote NO on Trump’s tax scam.

Trump’s tax scam is nothing more than a taxpayer-funded handout to billionaires and big corporations at the expense of working families. Call your representative and tell them to vote NO!

Call

Here are three reasons we must stop this bill:
It provides the Trump family a billion-dollar handout, by eliminating the estate tax. (Talk about self-serving!)
It eliminates popular deductions that middle-class families rely on just to slash the tax rate for big corporations.
It opens the floodgates to churches acting like Super PACs by reversing a decades-old law that prevents religious groups from endorsing political candidates.

This bill is terrible, and it should be a non-starter for every member of Congress who’s serious about serving the American people.

The stakes are too high to do nothing.

Call your representative today and tell them to vote NO:

Call your representatives, right now, and demand a better tax plan

This morning, Congressional leaders finally showed the American people their tax bill -- the one they were supposed to show us yesterday, and have been talking about behind closed doors for months.

So why the delay?

They've been afraid to show us what's inside ... and now, we know why.

We already knew this plan would cut taxes for rich people and corporations, and that's still true. But to pay for these unnecessary cuts, the money has to come from somewhere -- and Congress and the White House want it to come from hardworking middle-class families.

We can't let that happen. It's on all of us to call our representatives, right now, and demand a better tax plan CLICK HERE to be connected to your rep.

Here's how this plan could affect you:
  1. If you're one of the millions of Americans who count on Medicaid, Medicare, and other middle-class programs ... this plan sets the stage for draconian cuts down the road, by adding $1.5 trillion to our deficit over the next decade.

  2. If you claim certain deductions on your federal taxes because you are paying off student loans, or because you've incurred medical expenses, or because you pay your fair share in state income taxes ... this plan will take away your right to claim them.

  3. If you're looking to buy a house ... a new cap would be placed on how much mortgage interest you'd be able to deduct.

  4. If you get a tax credit because you're retired on disability, or because you have adopted children ... those vanish under this bill.
These moves aren't "closing loopholes," as Congressional leaders have claimed.

They're hurting millions of Americans, all so they can give tax breaks to huge corporations that don't need them. And, allow families worth more than $5 million to not pay a dollar of taxes on their estates.

This is what a bad process leads to: an equally bad bill. We shouldn't be surprised -- but it's up to us to make sure this doesn't go a step further.

Call your representative now to demand a better tax plan:

Tell Congress to reject a budget that cuts Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid & public education while giving massive tax breaks to the rich and powerful

Protect working families: Stop Trump's tax cuts for the wealthy & corporations!
President Trump, Republican leaders in Congress and a massive special-interest lobbying machine (run by the Koch brothers and corporate America) are gearing up to give massive tax breaks to millionaires and wealthy corporations. They want to pay for them by cutting Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, public education and other critical services for working families.
President Trump and Republican leaders have proposed budgets that would slash between $4 trillion and $6 trillion from those services we all depend on—just so that they can afford huge tax cuts of similar amounts that would further enrich billionaires and big corporations and encourage the offshoring of jobs. This is the health care fight all over again. We can win, but only if we all speak out.
Sign the petition telling members of Congress to reject a budget that cuts Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, public education and much more while giving massive tax breaks to the rich and powerful.
To: All members of Congress

Any tax and budget plans you support must meet the following principles:
  • The wealthy and big corporations must be required to pay their fair share of taxes. They must not get one penny in new tax cuts.
  • Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and services that protect the most vulnerable must not be put at risk of cuts. Congress must raise the revenue needed to fund investments that create millions of new jobs rebuilding roads and bridges, educating our children, expanding health care, researching new medical cures and ensuring a secure retirement for seniors.
  • Tax breaks should be eliminated that encourage multinational corporations to shift jobs and profits offshore. Corporations should pay what they owe on current offshore profits. And Congress should not establish new tax rates for overseas earnings that encourage companies to stash money abroad.
  • Congress must not use a fast-track, partisan process, known as reconciliation, to pass tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations that lose revenue.

Use a one-click tool to tell Trump, McConnell, and Ryan you're not buying what they're selling on taxes.

Republican leaders emerged from a 5-hour closed-door meeting where they finalized their tax "plan," and now Trump is selling it to the nation.
No matter what Trump says, here's the truth:
The only people the Republicans are trying to help are the rich and massive corporations -- despite new polls showing that 65% of Americans think corporate tax rates are too low and 62% oppose tax cuts for the rich.
Here's what to expect from Trump's speech describing the tax plan:
  • Massive tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, disguised as "simplifying" the tax code
  • Tax giveaways to big corporations, camouflaged as "cutting taxes for small businesses" (the vast majority of which already pay the lowest-possible tax rate)
  • A tax hike for the lowest tax bracket (aka those who can afford an increase in taxes the LEAST)
Trump and his Republican cronies are being so blatantly dishonest about the true implications of their plan because they know how unpopular it is.
But that won't stop them from doing everything they can -- including spending hundreds of millions of dollars -- to rush it through Congress with as little public input as possible. (Seriously: One corporate lobbying group has already pledged $100 million to help make sure it passes.)
That's why we need to make sure they hear our voices loud and clear.
With funding for programs like Medicare and Medicaid on the line, we can't afford to lose this battle.

Billionaire Nick Hanauer advocates for 0% in tax cuts for the 1%

My name is Nick Hanauer and I’m filthy rich. I’m not a 1%’er. I’m a 0.001%’er. If you read the business section of the paper, you’ve probably seen my name: I was one of the first investors in Amazon.com. I’ve sold other companies for billions of dollars, and now my friends and I own a bank. I’m a proud and unapologetic capitalist.

So you might be surprised to learn that I’m starting a petition to say that it would be criminally stupid for Congress to give rich guys like me another tax cut.

In fact, I believe that not one penny in tax cuts should go to millionaires, billionaires and wealthy corporations. Everyone knows that the biggest lie in economics is that tax cuts for the rich create growth and jobs. When Republicans talk about tax reform, they’re really talking about trickle down nonsense. The truth is, taxes on the rich don’t need to be “reformed”—they need to be raised, because it’s investments in the middle class that make our economy grow.

Our democracy and our economy are being ripped apart by growing inequality. Tax cuts for the rich masquerading as reform will only make it worse. I need you to help me fight for a tax code that puts working families back at the center of the economy.Another round of tax breaks for people like me will undermine our commitment to what really makes our country stronger: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, public education, investments in infrastructure and R&D, and more -- and make it impossible for the middle class to fulfill their function as the true job creators.

Join me and pledge to oppose any effort to cut taxes for the wealthy and well-connected. Not one penny in tax cuts should go to millionaires, billionaires and wealthy corporations.
