Subject: Support a ban on fracking for oil and natural gas

I strongly urge you to support the just-introduced legislation for a nationwide ban on hydraulic fracturing (fracking) for oil and natural gas, S.3247. (The accompanying House version is expected shortly.) 

A nationwide fracking ban would be invaluable for human health.  racking contaminates huge amounts of water and pollutes the air, exposing local communities to chemicals known to be toxic to humans and animals.  Scientific studies have documented serious health impacts among people who live near active fracking sites, including increased rates of hospitalization for cardiac, neurological, urological and cancer-related issues, as well as premature birth, low birth weight and congenital heart defects in babies. Recent investigations have even documented that fracking wastewater can be radioactive, especially in the Marcellus Shale.

While the danger is most immediate for people who live close to fracking sites, all of us are harmed, because when fracked gas leaks into the atmosphere, it accelerates climate change. As I'm sure you know, climate change contributes to health- and life-endangering heat waves, extreme weather, storms, flooding, expanded disease ranges, and more.

Tell Democrats: Stand with Puerto Rico against debt vultures

The vulture funds that are terrorizing the people of Puerto Rico already donated more than $231,000 to 2020 Democratic candidates. Even though the damage the firms are inflicting on Puerto Rico is clear, only Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have returned the firms' donations.1What hedge funds are doing to Puerto Rico is despicable. The Wall Street hedge funds, known as vulture funds, that own Puerto Rico's debts are forcing the island to close schools and cut budgets to line their own pockets. Their main tool is an unelected Financial Oversight Management Board, known as the junta, that is imposing brutal austerity on the island to serve the interest of Wall Street over the Puerto Rican people. Puerto Ricans fighting for their island's future are demanding an end to the junta and for 2020 Democrats to return vulture fund contributions.2  We need to stand in solidarity and echo their demands. Four hundred public schools have been closed. Local government budgets were slashed by $150 million so far, and another $220 million in cuts are planned. The University of Puerto Rico's budget was cut in half. Those massive cuts are going to the vulture funds that buy up debt for pennies on the dollar and demand repayment in full. These Wall Street vulture funds are costing lives and creating suffering to line their own pockets.3 The heroes of the resistance in Puerto Rico are the people who are rising up against this despicable state of affairs, including by ousting corrupt Gov. Ricardo Rosselló. Top recipients of vulture fund cash include Michael Bennet ($49,800), Beto O'Rourke ($28,750), John Delaney ($26,300), Joe Biden ($25,350) and Pete Buttigieg ($21,350). Sens. Kamala Harris ($15,500), who co-sponsored a Warren-Sanders bill to cancel Puerto Rico's debts, and Cory Booker ($23,300), who signed a letter demanding the end of the junta, have also not yet returned donations. Urge Democrats: Fight for a progressive plan to crack down on Big Pharma

Petition to the House Ways & Means, Education & Labor and Energy & Commerce Committees: "Fight for the most progressive plan to crack down on predatory Big Pharma. At the very least, any proposal to negotiate drug prices must include more than 25 drugs per year with no ceiling on the total number and policies to address high prices at initial launch." Add your name: Under pressure from House progressives, Speaker Pelosi just unveiled a better-than-expected plan to crack down on predatory Big Pharma prices.1 But this plan still isn't as strong as what we need to bring drug prices down and stop Big Pharma's out-of-control greed. And there's a real risk it gets watered down even more in fruitless negotiations. Ro Khanna's plan would force companies to follow international average prices or face tough consequences. Rep. Lloyd Doggett's bill would allow Medicare to negotiate discounts and let the government issue a license to produce a generic version of the drug if Big Pharma refuses to negotiate in good faith.2,3 Democratic leaders took these bold plans off the table. Their plan is weaker than the progressive options, but tougher than some of the draft plans that were floated by some of Speaker Pelosi's closest allies. It instructs HHS to negotiate the prices of only a minimum of 25 pharmaceutical drugs each year, with an unnecessary maximum of 250. It leaves room for prices above international standards and for Big Pharma to launch new medicines with absurdly high prices only to "bargain" them down. It levies penalties instead of creating competition when Big Pharma refuses to negotiate. It does include important protections to cap out-of-pocket pay under Medicare Part D and repeal some recent price hikes, and it does not include Pelosi's horrible earlier idea to let corporate-friendly arbitration panels set drug prices.4 Our voices helped block a terrible Big Pharma-friendly Democratic proposal, but we need to fight to improve the new Democratic plan and keep pushing for progressive plans that actually crack down on Big Pharma and deliver lower prescription drug prices for the American people. Over the last decade, Republicans exempted more and more millionaires from the estate tax. A married couple can now keep $22 million from being taxed. Fewer than 2,000 families are now subject to the tax, and thousands of super-rich families are dodging millions in taxes.1 The Trump Tax Scam was a Wall Street handout on steroids. On top of handing freebies to multinational corporations, it gave millions in tax cuts to the richest of the rich by cutting the estate tax. Sen. Bernie Sanders is teaming up with Rep. Urge Congress To Declare A Climate Emergency

Last week, Congress members Earl Blumenauer, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders introduced a bill (H.Con.Res.52) that would declare a climate emergency in the United States, and call for a national mobilization to address the climate crisis.

The resolution lays out some of the most important evidence that climate change has become a crisis, and must be solved “at a massive scale to halt, reverse, mitigate, and prepare for the consequences of the climate emergency and to restore the climate for future generations.”

Tell Congress: Pass the Student Debt Cancellation Act of 2019

Yesterday, CREDO and our partners delivered over 200,000 petition signatures directly to the Democratic National Committee calling for a presidential primary debate on climate change. Momentum for a climate debate is growing fast. Fifteen Democratic presidential candidates have joined our call, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.1 So have the USA Today Editorial Board2 and the Miami-Dade Democratic Party.3 DNC Chairman Tom Perez made a terrible decision last week to reject our demands and is now feeling the pressure – including backlash from within his own party. More than 50 members of the DNC – over 10% of the total voting membership – signed a resolution last week calling on Perez to reverse his decision and allow a climate debate.4 If we can amplify their voices, we can push Perez to give candidates a real forum to talk about solutions. Tell Congress: Pass the Loan Shark Prevention Act

If Wall Street banksters want a loan, they can borrow from the Federal Reserve and pay only 2.5% interest. People without access to loans are stuck with double-digit interest rates on credit cards. These payday loans come with sky-high interest rates and misleading terms and conditions that trap desperate people into a cycle of debt.2 A 1978 Supreme Court decision effectively legalized loan sharks by allowing credit card companies to base themselves in states like South Dakota and Delaware with no interest rate caps. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Sanders' new bill would undo the damage by instituting a national 15% cap on all consumer loans. Both Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Sanders – along with numerous other progressive champions like Sen. Elizabeth Warren – also propose creating a postal banking system, like the one that existed from 1917 to 1967, in order to make sure people can still access credit at lower interest rates.3 The bill is only two pages long. It is simple, clear – and a brutal contrast with Donald Trump, who is sabotaging the Consumer Financial Protection Agency and rolled back strict rules on payday lenders.4 The proposal has right-wing media and Wall Street insiders up in arms, and the payday loan industry is mounting an offensive. But a recent poll found that more than 70% of Americans support the bill – including majorities of Republicans.5 We need to force Trump Republicans and corporate Democrats to explain why they oppose something so popular. On January 17, 2019, the Save Oak Flat Act was introduced in the US House of Representatives and the US Senate. The Bills would repeal Section 3003 of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2015 and keep Oak Flat in public ownership.

Congressman Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) introduced the US House version, HR 665, with 29 cosponsors from both parties.

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) introduced S 173, the Senate version of the Save Oak Flat Act with four cosponsors, Senators Warren (D-MA), Merkley (D-OR), Wyden (D-OR), Heinrich (D-NM), and Booker (D-NJ).

The success of the Save Oak Flat Act is very important for the protection of Oak Flat.

Oak Flat is critical for the religious freedom of Native Americans and is an ecological and recreational haven. Oak Flat is located 60 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona and is public land managed by the Tonto National Forest.

Rio Tinto, one of the world's largest mining companies, wants to privatize Oak Flat to build a copper mine, destroying Oak Flat in the process. Rio Tinto's Congressional supporters had been unsuccessful 12 times over ten years to give Oak Flat to Rio Tinto, but managed to attach the Oak Flat land exchange to the National Defense Authorization Act in the dead of night in December of 2014. The land exchange, which would give Oak Flat to Rio Tinto upon completion of an "environmental" study, is Section 3003 of the massive defense bill.

Rio Tinto’s mining plan for Oak Flat is currently being analyzed by the US Forest Service with public input. The more the public learns about Rio Tinto’s planned block cave mine at Oak Flat and the associated 5,000 plus acres of public land that would be permanently destroyed by a toxic waste dump and other mine facilities, the more convinced we become that this project is not feasible and must be stopped.

John McCain and Jeff Flake, both of whom had ties to Rio Tinto, ensured that the massive land giveaway moved forward and tucked it into the year-end defense spending bill. Apache residents and environmentalists are concerned that “since the mining industry is often exempt from portions of environmental laws such as the Clean Water Act, the invasive copper mining project could damage the area’s water - a resource many Native Americans claim a spiritual obligation to protect.”4 Activism to protect sacred Native lands and other sensitive areas from mining works. After hundreds of thousands of CREDO members recently spoke out against mining in the West, we helped to successfully stop destructive mining projects at Yellowstone and tribal lands near Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. With massive U.S. support, Saudi Arabia has waged war in a Yemen for more than three years, resulting in around 50,000 direct casualties of violence and more than 113,000 children – 130 a day – dying of malnutrition and preventable disease.1,2 Progressive champions in the House of Representatives and Senate, led by Rep. Ro Khanna and Sen. Bernie Sanders, just introduced a bipartisan resolution to end the U.S. military involvement in Yemen.3 CREDO is joining a coalition of progressive partners that includes Demand Progress and Win Without War to support this War Powers Resolution, end American complicity in the Saudi-led war in Yemen – and save countless lives. Las December, the Senate approved an identical resolution – but former Speaker Paul Ryan blocked it in the House of Representatives. Now, with Democrats in charge of the House and bipartisan backing in both chambers of Congress, we have a shot at a life-saving victory.4 Trump's coziness with the Saudi regime is unacceptable, whether it's supporting the regime's war in Yemen or refusing to hold its leaders accountable for assassinating Jamal Khashoggi. It is Congress' responsibility to debate, vote on and authorize military action. But unless Congress asserts its authority and supports this new War Powers Resolution, it will continue allowing Trump to make the United States complicit in Saudi atrocities.5 Since the start of the war in 2015, the United States has provided the Saudis with weapons and logistical and intelligence support. We have helped refuel coalition jets as they dropped bombs on Yemeni civilians under the guise of confronting Iran, which has limited ties to Yemen's Houthi rebels. Despite a bus bombing that killed 29 children and calls for greater U.S. oversight, the United States is still supporting the Saudi war – all without explicit congressional authorization.6 This unauthorized war started under the Obama administration. But Donald Trump overturned a ban on selling precision-guided munitions to the Saudis and gave the regime a green light to double down.7 The death toll in Yemen has been heart-wrenching – but right now, a massive public outcry to end United States support for these atrocities could finally bring an end to this brutal war. It contributed to a fast-moving cholera outbreak – the largest documented in modern history – that is affecting more than 1.2 million people.8 It has also led to widespread starvation: 400,000 Yemeni children are at risk of death from starvation while the United Nations estimates that as many as 13 million people in Yemen are on the verge of famine.9,10 Saudi forces are using food as a weapon of war by enforcing a blockade that is stopping much needed food, medicine and supplies from entering the country.11 Lives are at stake. We must do all we can to push Congress to pass the new War Powers Resolution to reassert its constitutional authority and end our complicity in mass murder. Congressional Democrats just united to introduce the Raise the Wage Act of 2019, which would immediately bump the minimum wage and raise it to $15 by 2024.2 Preschool teachers, fast-food workers, bank tellers and working parents: millions of Americans would benefit immediately, some seeing as much as $3,500.3 Time to force Trump Republicans to go on the record opposing a raise for one in four workers.1 We need to drive up public support for this bill immediately to force Republicans to show where they really stand – on the side of big business and bad bosses. No one benefits more from raising the minimum wage than women and people of color forced into low-wage jobs by prejudice and institutional racism. Forty percent of Black workers and 34 percent of Latinx workers would see a pay increase under this legislation. Nearly 56 percent of the overall number who would get a raise are women.4 The Raise the Wage Act would eliminate the tipped wage so that even employees who get tips, like restaurant servers, are guaranteed a fair wage – a change studies show benefits workers. It would eliminate loopholes businesses use to underpay workers. Most importantly, it would peg the minimum wage to the median wage so the minimum wage stops slipping in value.5 Today, the real value of the federal minimum wage is actually a few dollars lower than it was in 1968. Boosting the minimum wage would also create jobs by injecting more money into local economies. Restaurants continue to thrive even in cities that raised the minimum wage, and more than 90 percent of those who would benefit are adults.6 In other words, every Trump Republican talking point on the minimum wage is a lie to disguise their alliance with businesses that aim to pay people as little as possible to pad their own pockets.
