NAFTA eliminates jobs, erodes wages, increases pollution, and undermines critical environmental and health protections, harming lower-income families and people of color. It is already a bad deal for American workers and the planet – and if Trump gets his way, it could get even worse. That’s why we’re building pressure on Congress to insist that any NAFTA renegotiation must: Institute a democratic, accountable and transparent negotiating process that doesn’t give corporate interests special access or seats at the table. Eliminate the investor-state dispute settlement system, which surrenders U.S. sovereignty to multinational corporations that can sue our government before a tribunal of three corporate lawyers – ordering taxpayers to pay corporations unlimited sums of money for the loss of expected future profits, especially if they think protections for workers or the environment might undermine corporate NAFTA privileges. Include strong and enforceable environmental and labor standards. Require all imports meet our safety rules, including environmental and labor protections on imported food, goods and services. Preserve Buy American and Buy Local policies, eliminating NAFTA’s waivers that allow companies to offshore our tax dollars instead of reinvesting them to create jobs here. Remove rules that drive up drug prices by allowing pharmaceutical companies extended monopolies on drug patents. The Trump administration officially notified Congress it will be renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

NAFTA made it easier for corporations to offshore jobs and to attack environmental, health, and other safeguards. It killed jobs and depressed wages for millions, and it was written and negotiated behind closed doors by hundreds of corporate advisers.

Donald Trump has ordered a review of all United States trade deals, including NAFTA. While Trump has pledged to remake our trade deals to benefit the United States, his promises around trade just don't add up. Instead, he's stacked his cabinet with the same corporate advisors who brought us NAFTA and other flawed trade deals.

With a formal notice to Congress announcing Trump's intent to renegotiate NAFTA expected soon, we just released an alternative vision for the trade deal.1 The eight changes we propose are centered on replacing NAFTA with an entirely new approach to trade that prioritizes the needs of people and our planet over corporate profits.

The climate impact of NAFTA has been enormous -- it empowered corporate polluters to challenge environmental protections, boosted destructive mining in Mexico, and contributed to the rise of Canada's toxic tar sands industry. Now Trump's corporate-driven trade agenda threatens to make matters even worse.

TransCanada used NAFTA to file a $15 billion lawsuit against the United States over President Obama's rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline. While reviving this and other disastrous pipelines, Donald Trump made promises to workers to build them with US steel. But he almost immediately caved on this promise -- and only then did TransCanada drop its lawsuit.

Trump's Keystone backtrack betrays his empty rhetoric on trade. With his xenophobic, anti-environment, and pro-corporate trade agenda becoming increasingly clear, there's a real chance that NAFTA will only get worse. Congress must speak out now to ensure our trade policies respect workers, communities, and our planet.
