Last week, Trump's Federal Communications Commission (FCC) tried to kill the open internet. They ignored millions of Americans to end the internet as we know it and give big cable companies control of what we say and do online. But this fight isn't over. Congress has the authority to overturn the FCC's vote. Congress can use a "resolution of disapproval" to reverse this disastrous decision and restore the rules that protect the open internet.1 In both the House and Senate, members of Congress are planning to introduce these resolutions – now we need to get others to sign on. Millions of Americans called on the FCC to keep the internet working the way it is now – instead of letting big cable companies control what all Americans see, say and do online. But Trump's FCC Chairman Ajit Pai ignored us, and on Dec. 14, the FCC rushed to kill net neutrality. The agency dismissed the fact that the public comment process was corrupted by millions of fake comments and ignored requests to delay or cancel the vote from 18 state attorneys general, Republican and Democratic members of Congress, the creator of the internet, and of course millions of people who depend on the internet every day.2 Congress has the power and the responsibility to right this wrong. Thanks to the Congressional Review Act, Congress can review new regulations – in this case, the FCC's Orwellian-sounding “Restoring Internet Freedom” rule – and overrule them by passing a joint resolution of disapproval.3 Republicans in Congress used the process earlier this year when they repealed important broadband privacy protections. And in the Senate, even the minority party can force a resolution of disapproval to a vote – making every senator go on the record for or against net neutrality. Losing the open internet is particularly harmful for communities of color, who rely on the open internet to organize, create economic opportunity and fight back against oppression.4 More than 80 percent of Americans support net neutrality,5 and more than 1 million people called Congress in the last month alone, asking their representatives to save net neutrality. Free speech and civil rights champions throughout history have faced setbacks, but they did not back down. The fight for a free and open internet is no different. We will continue to fight until we restore the rules that protect the internet as a platform for free speech, organizing, innovation and community building. On a party-line vote, the FCC voted for the first step of Chairman Ajit Pai's plan to hand control of the internet to giant telecom corporations.

Comcast and Verizon may have won this battle, but they have not won the war.

Today's vote was just the first step in the FCC's rule-making process. We have until July 17 to put as much pressure as possible not only on the FCC, but also on Congress and the White House, to keep net neutrality rules in place.

The reason we can stop this plan is because gutting net neutrality is massively unpopular. So many people have made online comments against this plan that the FCC's website crashed.

We need to make sure that Republicans in the House, Senate, and White House all understand that if the FCC goes forward with handing over control of the internet to Comcast and their big telecom brethren, they will be held accountable.

Here's what we're doing to get the message across loud and clear:

Trump’s Dangerous Team is at it again. This time Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Ajit Pai introduced a plan that would undo all of the strong rules implemented in 2015 that protect the open internet and prevent large internet service providers (ISPs) from controlling what we do online. We need to protect net neutrality so that all Internet users have access to the same content, communities, entertainment, commerce, and more online.

The first vote on this plan is May 18th, so we don’t have a lot of time to stop this plan that will hurt everyone who uses the Internet. We need to tell our elected officials that we will not stand for a plan that lets corporations control our internet usage for their own gain.

The new Chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), a former Verizon lawyer named Ajit Pai, is trying to kill net neutrality.  Chairman Pai has announced a plan that would undo the strong, enforceable rules put in place in 2015 that protect the open Internet.

Without net neutrality, Verizon, Comcast and the other monopoly Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will be able to start interfering with our ability as Internet users to control where we go and what we do online.

These giant telecoms want to pad their bottom lines through schemes that will allow them — not Internet users — to pick winners and losers online.

The first vote on Chairman Pai’s disastrous plan will be on May 18th, so we need to speak out today.

Because of net neutrality, the Internet has become an unparalleled engine for democracy, innovation, education, communication, entertainment and commerce.

But without strong rules to protect an open Internet, ISPs will be free to block content, control the pathways to information and create pay-to-play schemes.

Fortunately, if enough of us speak out, we can win.

In 2015, we won strong open Internet protections under Title II of the Communications Act because of a massive public outcry in support of net neutrality, including 4 million of us who spoke out to support it.

Since then, opponents of net neutrality have been relentless in trying to take away our hard-fought victory — first in the courts, and now through the FCC.

We need to be as relentless in our support of net neutrality as the other side has been in their opposition, and we need to send a strong message to everyone who has power — whether they’re members of the House, the Senate or the FCC — that we will not let them turn back the clock on the open Internet.
