Urge Your Senators to Vote NO on Disastrous Mining Bill

Last week, Hudbay and its joint-venture partner Mitsubishi announced formal approval of the Copper World mine. Hudbay disclosed that it is indefinitely delaying its plan to produce finished copper on site, meaning that all copper concentrate from the mine would be exported overseas.

Currently, Hudbay is limited to dumping its poisonous tailings on private land. The U.S. Senate is poised to vote on a 400-page permitting reform bill that includes language that would allow Hudbay to quickly turn federal land into a waste dump.

SR 5653, deceptively titled the “Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act,” or BAAJA, would seriously weaken the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, National Historic Preservation Act, and National Environmental Policy Act and would undermine the landmark “Rosemont Decision” that prevented Hudbay from dumping its waste in the Coronado National Forest less than a decade ago. This bill has wide-reaching implications for all of our beloved public lands.

SR 5653 has passed the House and it is expected to be taken up on Nov 9 or 10. They don't have enough votes, yet, but it would only take 5 Democrats to support it for it to pass.

Save the Scenic Santa Ritas strongly opposes passage of this bill.

Please contact our Senators, Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego, now and request they vote against the BAAJA on November 9th. I hear they are on the fence about the bill.
