Tell your Senators: Wild Animals and Border Walls Don't Mix.

endangered Jaguar

The Trump administration is bulldozing ahead with its plans for a destructive border wall that harms people, wildlife, and our pocketbooks. Currently, there are barriers along hundreds of miles of the U.S.-Mexico border, and they have been an environmental and human rights disaster, with little demonstrated benefit to national security.

The Sierra Club is holding a postcard campaign. If you aren't a member, you can still participate. Send a postcard to your Senators, or even better, drop it by their office.

Simple write: Do not to appropriate any money for the border wall.
And include your name and address.

Find their addresses below - and the other ways to contact your Senator.
Let 'em have it!

Come learn more about the Arizona Legislature, the process, and what happened this past session. Find out how you can get involved in advocacy at or outside the Capitol. Arizona legislators considered fewer bills to weaken local environmental programs this session. The legislative leaders were, instead, looking to Congress and the White House to deliver on an anti-environmental agenda. However, our Legislature did engage in an all-out assault on Arizona’s direct democracy. Chapter Director Sandy Bahr will present on these topics and more.

TELL EPA ADMINISTRATOR SCOTT PRUITT TO DROP THE REPEAL OF THE CLEAN WATER RULE AND PROTECT OUR DRINKING WATER!

URGENT: Donald Trump and EPA Admin Scott Pruitt announced the repeal of the EPA’s Clean Water Rule, giving polluters a pass to dump waste in our waterways and threaten the drinking water of 117 million Americans.

Trump and Pruitt’s attack on the Clean Water Rule is their first step towards gutting the entire Clean Water Act and the nearly 45 years of water protections that go with it. We can't let this happen. Send a message today to tell Scott Pruitt to keep his hands off our water!

Sign the petition here: It reads:

Dear Administrator Pruitt,

I am absolutely opposed to the proposed repeal of the Clean Water Rule. Repealing this vital safeguard will put our health and communities throughout the nation at risk. I strongly urge you to reconsider your position and drop the repeal of the Clean Water Rule.

This repeal will put the drinking water of 117 million people at risk -- that's 1 in 3 of us! Too many communities throughout the nation already struggle with access to clean water. Removing this protection for the bodies of water that feed our drinking water, filter pollutants, and recharge groundwater would make things worse.

As with many issues related to the environment, low-income communities and communities of color will be disproportionately impacted by removing this safeguard. Repealing the Clean Water Rule could increase water contamination. Contaminated water can cause a variety of health problems, especially for children. We have seen this heartbreaking and wholly avoidable reality in Flint, MI. Additionally, small and rural communities who rely on private wells, or whose water systems lack the resources to deal with polluted sources, will be hit hard by this rollback.

Protect our drinking water and keep the Clean Water Rule in place!

Oppose Trump’s anti-science, climate denier pick for head of NASA

Trump just nominated an anti-science, climate denier to run NASA.

Jim Bridenstine is not a scientist. He’s a member of Congress with no experience in space. And he has an ugly history of anti-science rants. On the House floor in 2013, Bridenstine demanded President Obama apologize for dedicating federal resources to studying climate change, citing junk science and outright lies to justify his assertion that climate change isn't real. "It was warm once, before cars even existed!"

Bridenstine's nomination is already being criticized by the two senators from Florida, Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson, because NASA should be run by a scientist. Or, at the very least, someone who respects and listens to scientific fact rather than a career politician.

NASA’s earth sciences division is at the forefront of climate change research. NASA’s satellites provide critical data on matters such as Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. The Trump regime has already cut back NASA's climate research. But Bridenstine would do much more damage to NASA and federal climate research.

Dear Chief of Police....

I am becoming more and more concerned with the militarization of our police forces. I watched horrified as police in N. Dakota shot tear gas and water cannons at the peaceful Water Protectors who bravely stood up against the Dakota Access Pipeline. Isn't it against the law to use chemical warfare on civilians? Aren't police supposed to protect citizens, not greedy oil corporations? Some vets were so outraged that they headed to Standing Rock to make a human shield to defend the Water Protectors.

After several peaceful marches in Tucson, some activists and concerned citizens went to protest when President Trump held a campaign-style rally in Phoenix. Some, expecting a peaceful demonstration, brought their children. The next day, I watched a video of  Phoenix police, in full riot gear, shooting tear gas and rubber bullets into a relatively small crowd of chanting protesters after the Trump rally ended. This was definitely overreach by the police. Just because you have military surplus weapons at your disposal doesn't mean you should use them - especially on the people you are sworn to protect.

Now our president has reversed the restrictions on military hardware for police. My fear is that if the police have the weapons they will feel compelled to use them - like they did at the Phoenix protest. So Dan and I decided to write the Phoenix and Tucson Chiefs of Police and ask them not to accept any more military surplus.

Do we want a police state?

Here are our letters that we mailed this morning:

Phoenix protest

Dear Chief Williams,

I am writing regarding the Phoenix Police Department’s response to the anti-Trump protestors after the rally on August 22, 2017. I have several friends who drove to Phoenix to protest. Some were human rights activists, some were just good citizens. There were even some parents with children. Yes, children. Because they expected a peaceful protest like we had in Tucson. I am concerned about how the police handled the situation after the rally. This video shows what appears to be a serious overreaction by the police. https://www.facebook.com/RealNewsAz/videos/1987765628123220/

It appears that the officers on the line were being provocative with their full riot gear on and then they charged through the barriers and started firing tear gas at a small number of peaceful protestors who were doing nothing more than chanting slogans. Since when is it acceptable to use chemical weapons on civilians? Isn’t that illegal even in wartime? Is it your objective to promote martial law? Even if some of the protestors were yelling at the police that is no reason to escalate the situation. Your officers need training on how to deal with angry protestors and separate any anarchists from the crowd so things don’t escalate to a point where the destruction of property occurs. Actually listening to the citizens or talking it out can go a long way. But there is no chance for listening when cops shield themselves with helmets, face shields, gas masks, and ear plugs.

Why were peaceful protestors met with a line of police in riot gear in the first place? Can’t you see that the presence of heavily armed police could promote fear and anger that might incite a riot? Militarizing the police is not the way to deal with citizens expressing their right to free speech. It is the duty of the police to protect the people. In this time of civil unrest, it is more important than ever that the police build trust with the people they serve, not treat them like criminals or the enemy. In Tucson, we had a peaceful march and the police were there to protect us from angry haters. The police officers stood on the sides and we thanked them as we walked by. Police will be able to serve better, if they build trust by getting to know people – not through fear and intimidation. Building good relationships will encourage people to work with the police and report crimes in their neighborhoods, making our communities safer for everyone.

Now Trump has reversed the restrictions on military hardware for police. Please, don’t militarize our police. It will only encourage more violence and vandalism on the streets. The police are there to protect us, not to incite peaceful protestors into war.

Sincerely,
Jana Segal

Tucson march

Dear Chief Magnus,

I wanted to thank you and the Tucson Police Department for your professionalism and restraint. I have participated in a number of protest rallies since the election of President Trump. The crowds were large and, in some cases, angry; but it felt as though your officers were there to protect us from harm. They quietly kept the crowd under control, managed traffic, and were courteous and professional.

What a contrast to what we witnessed in Phoenix! There, the officers appeared to provoke a small group of noisy but peaceful protestors by showing up in full riot gear, forming a skirmish line, and aggressively advancing on the protestors, who were still behind the barricades the police had erected to keep them away from the Convention Center. When the protestors raised their voices in protest, they started firing tear gas. That is no way to deal with citizens. Again, the contrast with the professionalism of TPD is like night and day.

I recently saw news reports that President Trump has authorized the sale of additional military arms to police departments, including grenade launchers and bayonets. When, exactly, would a police force ever need to use either one of those?!!! I presume we can count on you to maintain your professionalism and not purchase any of these weapons, even if they are being offered to you by the Federal Government.

Thank you for your service protecting the citizens of Tucson.

Daniel P Stormont

Urgent: Can you call your member of Congress right away? Tell them to do everything in their power to pressure Trump from revoking DACA.

URGENT: Reports are saying that Trump may revoke DACA--the Obama-era program currently protecting from deportation young people who immigrated to the United States as children--this week.1
This is an emergency. 800,000 kids who know no other country but this one, and who entrusted their personal information to the federal government on a promise that it won't use that information to deport them, are in danger of being snatched in their homes and deported by immigration agents. This is not a partisan issue: 71 to 75 percent of voters, and dozens of Republicans in Congress, don't want Trump to revoke DACA.2
We need to act fast and demand Congress protect the 800,000 young people in imminent danger. Can you call your member of Congress right away? Tell them to do everything in their power to pressure Trump from revoking DACA.
You can choose from these numbers to call.
It's best to speak in your own words, but here are some points to get you started.
  • My name is ___ from (your city). I oppose Trump's attempt to target immigrant kids and want DACA to remain in place.
  • More than 70% of voters, both Republicans and Democrats, want young immigrants protected from deportation.
  • 800,000 kids are in imminent danger of being stolen away from their homes and deported by Trump. Will the representative/senator do everything they can to pressure the White House to keep it in place?
Trump is under competing pressures from his bigoted base and Republicans and Democrats who want DACA protections to stay put.4 Congress can do a lot to pressure Trump, so they need to hear from us fast and loud.
Will you call your Congress members and tell them to do everything they can to protect DACA?

Tell your Senators: Trump’s pick of an unqualified, anti-science talk show host with no credible science, policy, or agriculture background is unacceptable

In yet another attack on science, President Trump has nominated Sam Clovis — a radio talk show host with no scientific or agricultural background and a history of making racist, sexist, and homophobic remarks — to be the chief scientist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Clovis is an admitted climate change “skeptic”, saying that climate science is “junk science” and “not proven.” [1] Farmers need USDA to help them address and adapt to a changing climate, not stick its head in the sand. We all know agriculture has a big role to play in being a solution to climate change, but that won’t happen with Clovis at the helm of scientific research.
The position Clovis has been nominated for oversees a budget of nearly $3 billion and is responsible for agriculture and natural resource issues. The Farm Bill requires that the person in this position be a scientist, stating that the nominee "shall be appointed by the President . . . from among distinguished scientists with specialized training or significant experience in agricultural research, education, and economics.” [2] He's not an agricultural scientist, nor is he an agricultural economist. In short, he is simply not qualified for this position.
To make matters worse, Clovis has a history of making racist, sexist, and homophobic remarks. Clovis has made racist remarks about former President Obama, former Attorney General Eric Holder, former Labor Secretary Tom Perez, and Van Jones, among others; sexist remarks about House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and all Democratic women; and compared protecting marriage equality and LGBTQ rights to protecting pedophilia [3][4].
