Defunding the banks and financiers behind these dirty pipelines is an effective way to prevent their construction

People all over the country have been divesting from the fossil-fuel industry. Working with a number of indigenous-led and grassroots activist groups, climate hawks gathered more than 151,000 signatures calling on major banks to pull their funding from the Dakota Access Pipeline and other tar sands pipelines.
Defunding the banks and financiers behind these dirty pipelines is an effective way to prevent their construction in the first place. Here are some of the incredible results from the pledges collected online:
  • Over 14,000 Bank of America customers with assets of more than $750 million
  • More than 13,000 Wells Fargo customers with assets over $882 million
  • Nearly 10,000 JP Morgan Chase customers with assets of more than $540 million
  • Over 5,000 Citibank customers with assets of nearly $225 million
Thousands are already closing accounts and moving assets to credit unions, local banks and fossil-free banks. This is what it looks like when the climate movement wields its financial power!
